An interesting border crossing started our trip into Nicaragua! Starting with a few busses from La Fortuna in Costa Rica, when we arrived at the border it was chaos! Locals everywhere shouting things in Spanish and trying to get everyone's business as soon as they left the bus!
Then after a very confusing border crossing was finally achieved, we were met with loads of armed security guards, police and army! We opted for local 'chicken busses' to get us to San Juan rather than a shuttle bus and it was another funny experience! The bus was heaving with people and before anyone could even work out where to stand or sit it was off. Speeding round the streets, 80's music blaring! The funniest thing is that most of the local busses are old re-used American school busses, the big yellow ones like you would see in the movies!
San Juan del Sur is known as both a party and surf town. Quite a small but nice town centre with local shops, bars and restaurants.
We booked into a small guesthouse and spent the next few days just pottering around town. Ate some local food, watched an amazing sun set over a few drinks and chilled out!
On the last day we took a 4x4 jeep to a local beach as it was highly recommended on quite a few blogs and travel guides. However on arrival it was more of a surfers beach with pretty crazy waves! Also a bit battered by the winds whipping up the sands but good to get out of town for a few hours.
Luckily though Central America most of the journeys are short and sweet rather than the crazy long ones in South America so after a chicken bus and boat we would be on the volcanic islands of Ometepe.
