Moving further north we headed to the city of Granada. One of the most important historical cities of Nicaragua along with Leon, our next destination. Apparently Granada and Leon went through years of infighting to gain dominance in the area as both were towns of wealthy businesses in pre/ post colonial times.

The city is relatively small so just a few days to chill out was planned. The city centre was quite colonial with the usual features on the buildings and a cathedral marking the centre of town.

We first tried some of the more famous local food in the Central Park, it was claimed to be a mix of vegetables with pork and sauces. Turned out to be more like boiled cabbage type vegetables with pork crackling! Anyway we tried it so that was the main thing!

We stayed in one of the more popular hostels known for socialising and nights out but it was probably one of the least party hostels we've stayed in, the vibe in Central American hostels is definitely different to those in South America!

To break the stay up we headed 10km out of town to Lake Apoyo. This was a lake formed by a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago and which since filled with rain water. It has become the clearest fresh water lake in Central America!

We've stayed in so many hostels and even dorms when we needed to lately, we went all out and stayed in a little luxury resort on the lakes edge and got a nice room over looking the waterfront! Bliss... for a night!

The few days we spent at the resort we just sunbathed, swam, kayaked, had some good food and a few beers, well deserved!

Back to the city for the last night and we sampled what was claimed were the best ribs south of Saint Louis! They were good!

Onto to Leon next, meant to be a better city to visit but with an even hotter and more humid temperature than Granada... Hard to imagine!
