Our next stop was Honduras. We only planned a short stop there because a lot of the country (mainly the cities) is quite unstable. Many of the tourists are put off by higher rates of crime than elsewhere in Central and a lot tend to skip the country all together or head to the Caribbean Bay Islands which are very safe for tourists and backpackers.

The journey was long but not too bad via a shuttle from Nicaragua. The border crossing was smooth and the ferry on time, a good start! We planned to visit one of the islands named Utila. The population was more in tune with Caribbean islands that have developed over time with British influence rather than Spanish influenced Latin America. Until recently English was still the first language and its spoken with a very thick Caribbean accent, interesting after months in Latin America!

The island has a small population of around 3,100 and the main activity is definitely scuba diving! We had just under a week planned on the Island and treated it as a little 'holiday' within the madness of travelling.

I went on two dives, we had good visibility, warm waters, really nice coral and a decent amount of marine life. The reef that stretches from Belize down towards the Bay Islands is second in size to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. We didn't see any big marine life, hard when I will always now compare dives to those in Galápagos, but what we did see what nice. Our time on the islands was also prime for Whale Sharks but unfortunately we didn't see any! Hopefully further up the coast.

Our dive school also allowed us to go out for free on dive boats to snorkel and as there were a lot of trainee divers going out, we got to snorkel some really good shore reefs.

The rest of the week we made the most of the island. At only 9 miles by 3 miles it was easy to do! We pottered around town, stopping for nice bbq food or local beers. One day we hired a quad bike to scout the whole island which was a great afternoon. Completely off road most of the time, in and out of woods, getting stuck in bogs, up onto beaches and around unused roads and paths! We embarrassingly got stuck for about half hour aswell as the bike wouldn't start... Turns out as its a semi auto it just needed to be in manual!!

Most nights we were out, and we had some really good meat and tuna steaks! One night we also made the most of 'ladies night' were girls drunk for free in one of the most popular bars in town... Was only going to end one way!

Island life was cool, chilled out, great weather and good company. Although people think travelling is one big holiday, and it sort of is, it's still nice to get away from the hustle of main land Latin America and chill in paradise!

We had a nice touch leaving the island and caught an offer on the catamaran where we only had to pay about $6. Up until recently and before competition came in the return ferry was $50!

Back to the mainland after just under a week and onto a town famous for old Mayan Ruins... Then onto Guatemala...
