Wow a whirlwind tour of Switzerland over the last 5 days. We arrived in Zermatt by train with our first sight of the awesome Matterhorn towering above. The weather was perfect, warm and clear. Zermatt is surrounded by huge mountains every where you look, in the summer there are heaps of tramping tracks, mountain bike tracks and I can imagine how great it would be in the winter for skiing. We took a the vennicular rail up one mountain in the morning and the cog rail up another in the afternoon. Both times we were awarded the most amazing views of the Matterhorn and surrounding glaciers you could almost reach out and touch them. Although we didn't walk or climb far breathing was difficult at this altitude. Zermatt is like the Queenstown of NZ Swiss style. The next day we took the Glacier Express, the slowest express train in Switzerland, to Chur. The scenery was great with Alps and glaciers out every window. Overnight in Chur we were lucky enough to watch the final race of Americas cup, very exciting, went out for a quiet bee to celebrate. Just when I didn't think it could get any better we took the Bernina Express (thanks Peter for recommending this) with 55 tunnels, 196 bridges and the highest point 2236 meters above sea level.the scenery was spectacular. A long day across the Alps, through Switzerland back into Italy around lake Como and then back to Switzerland to Lugano another lakeside village. A chance for a catch up rest day and of course a bit of shopping. We had The first day of rain in three weeks! Leaving the pastries and yummy croissants behind I look forward to our next stage.Heading off to Croatia and the sea and sun.
