We left Kununurra on a Monday around lunchtime, leaving behind Jodie, Shane and their 2 kids Kaly & Zanda (sorry for any misspellings!) who were Jude's constant companions for our week and a half in town (but hoping we will see them again down the track), and headed north for the town of Wyndham, the most northern town in WA I believe. Our first port of call was the Five Rivers Lookout and although the very first stop was very disappointing with only glimpses through trees the stops got progressively better til we reached the top with about a 270 degree view which encompassed 4 of the 5 rivers, but not the actual sea. As we dropped back down into Wyndham Jude got his first look of the town as he had been asleep when arrived and he remarked on how old and rusty the town looked, 'Just like the town Lightning McQueen went to in Cars 1'. So hello Radiator Springs!
We checked into the caravan park for the night to be greeted by the free-range donkey which we were assured loved bread so you can imagine a few slices went his way and Jude then spent a fair bit of time prancing around with his hands waving above his head being 'the other' donkey there. We also went and had a look at arguably the largest (accessible) Boab tree in Oz and did a bit of tree-hugging.
The next morning we were up early as usual and luckily for Jude so was another little girl who lived in the park so they spent a couple of enjoyable hours riding (Jude on his scooter, her on her bike) around the caravan park and topped it off with a bounce on her super-size trampoline out the back of the bus they live in.
From there it was down to the port and some jetty walking and a chat with a group of locals whose 'country' was just the other side of the river (about 40 minutes by boat) before visiting the Pioneer Cemetery and putting a flower on each of the graves all dating from the early 1900's.
A quick photo op with the big croc at the entrance to town and we were off to find the Parry Lagoon bird watch. Unfortunately and despite being told by 2 different locals that it was 2wd we soon reached a short section that had been dug up so badly by tyres that Felix's undercarriage would have been sure to scrape (if not drag) so we had to turn back much to our mutual disappointment. Oh well, gotta leave something to see next time.
It was on to the Grotto, which did not disappoint although I will admit to being scared holding the hand of a 3-year old on the narrow and open-sided 140 steps that had been pretty much hewn into the side of the gorge to get us to the bottom. All safe tho (Jude assured me that he would look after me when I admitted my concerns) and the time at the base was wonderful. We didn't swim but we got to watch a monitor swimming back and forth across the pool seemingly unable to find its way back out. And naturally Jude did lots of rock throwing.
The climb back up is never as scary and we wasted a little time playing in the pools at the top before heading south and on to the final leg to Broome.
We would never have believed it but by the time we got to Halls Creek the rain had set in and for the first time in longer than I can remember we slept underneath a quilt!!
Cold again when we woke at 5.15am this morning and readied ourselves to follow the parade from the caravan park gates for the short walk to the Cenotaph and for Jude's first Dawn Service.
This was followed by a look around town and then on the Great Northern Highway again heading for Fitzroy River.
We stopped for a couple of hours and some lunch at a beautiful spot called Mary Pool where we did both bird & lizard watching and where Jude wanted to stay for the night. Way to early for me tho so we rejoined the Highway and made the magnificent drive to Fitzroy Crossing passing through some of the most outstanding red cliffs that just took your breath away, caused me to stop many times on the side of the road to take photos and actually were reminiscent of the landscape around Radiator Springs!
And here we are in Fitzroy Crossing. Arrived and set up in the caravan park by 3.30pm allowing for lots of play time for Jude (I'm very busy mum, I am doing my work; As he makes mud pies in the one bit of dirt he could find on this lovely grassed site.)
And as I just stepped out of the van to visit the toilet I narrowly avoided the cutest green frog that had taken up position on our step no doubt to grab any bugs that fell down after hitting into the window attracted from the light herein.
Oh, and the heavens above are just amazing - can't wait to free-camp somewhere tomorrow night where there will be no lights and we can star gaze to our hearts delight.
Happy Silver Anniversary to my darlings Wally & Tracy and Happy Birthday to my brother Steve.
Lest we forget.
