So today we went to Charters Towers which is a town in the middle of nowhere famous for the Australian gold rush A long very straight road out and back!
What a fascinating place though and such a lot of history Although quite large it was like an English village in that everyone knew everyone else! We went on a tour of the museum which was run by about 20 volunteers all of whom loved it Most of the displays were donated from Poms who had come at the end of 19th and beginning of 20th century Our tour guides family had come from Cambourne and had been tin miners Most of the inhabitants had mining backgrounds and some of them have lived in Charters Towers all of their lives!
We spent most of the day just wandering about marvelling that in this day and age people could still live so simply and they were all so desperate to please :-) We had our lunch in a carvery which was more like an extended private kitchen but the food and hospitality was fantastic!
We then headed back to Bowen where we spent the night next to a lady who was in a small camper with a full sized Macaw loose in it with her ....nowt so strange as folks! During the night we had a mother and father of a thunder storm which actually at times shook the motorhome We opened the curtains and watched and wondered whether any of the roads would be passable the next day!
