Last blog for a bit...
so after a helish trip to Sumatera and a few problems once arrive here, we are now settled and very happy. We arrived yesterday and found a very nice cheap B&B, which IS serving breakfast! it has hot water and a tv too!!!! so we can watch indonesian soap operas to our hearts content. Today after having our first lie in for a week, walked up the panarama park to see the Japanese caves built by indonesian POWs in WW2. We had to walk down a long way and there wasnt much to see once we got down there but lots of tunnels. We then walked over to see the view of the Canyon which is absolutely beautiful, and surrounded by huge volcanoes and lush tropical rainforest. We are getting up at 6am tomorrow to do the walk through it to the village that sells traditional silver on the other side. We also went to a fort and to the zoo, which is 5000 enbtry fee ech (about 25p) so we were not expecting much but they had tigers, bears, orantugans, gibbons, monkeys, reptiles etc. With 25p entrance fee they cannot afford to look after them and they are some of the most miserable creatures i have ever seen. (the photo of the organutan sums it up!) some of the cages were ok and international standard but some were really not ok and they fed live animals to all the meat eaters! I have decided that my starting point in making things better in zoos will be bears and monkeys (just as Simon said funnily enough). Because without fail they are always the ones that get neglected in captivity and they are probably the 2 most prone to depression and going insane because of it! bears are always in concrete pits when their natural habitat is forest and monkeys are always in 4mx4m cages with nothing to do. these ones had viruses, cancerous growths, one was blind in one eye with what looked like a broken jaw, and one was playing with one of the many rubbish bags in the enclosure and was putting it on his head and over his face! I'm gonna change it!
Anyway, its been a great day today, there is food everywhere here and people eating even though ramadan doesnt finish till the 13/14th but thank god for that so we are celebrating with a feast tonight! Dan has made friends with the guys in the Apache Cafe over the road and is probably getting drunk while i'm writing this so i'm gonna go join him! its beena beautiful day here but its just started tipping it down - great...
sorry if these blogs are boring and undetailed but we'd just like to forget about the last 5days really! We are now in the land of white beaches, rainforest, mountains, volcanoes and waterfalls so we will have lots to tell you soon!
Bye for now, love you all lots xxxx
