The 10 hour flight from Fiji went surprisingly fast and before we knew it we had touched down in LA and were taking in the incredible heat. After picking up our hire car we headed to Downtown where we had booked a hotel room for a few days. Driving through LA was certainly daunting with up to 8 lanes across the highway and huge cars leaving us for dust.
In the morning we headed to Hollywood for the day, stopping for our first Mexican lunch (we'd heard the mexican food is good here) at Cantina, a Mexican sports bar that had more TV screens than Currys! Bellies full we did the walk of fame which stretches over 2.5 miles each side. About 200 photo's of hollywood stars, we then did a celebrity homes and famous landmark tour which in an open top minibus. In Beverly Hills we saw the Beckham's house, the house where Michael Jackson passed away and the Cruise household just to name a few. We also saw the famous Hollywood sign and some settings from movies including Mr Miaggi's house from Karate Kid before heading to Rodeo Drive, Santa Monica Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard.
The next day we took a trip down to Santa Monica and had a walk along the famous pier, and of course, we went on the ferris wheel! The rest of the day was spent lazing on the beach and people watching (some very interesting sights!) That night we went to watch LA Galaxy, it was Robbie Keanes debut and he scored the first goal resulting in a 2-0 win. Because they kept a clean sheet or a "shut out" as they call it here, we all got a free southern fried chicken meal! Only in America!
The following day we went to Universal Studios, we managed to do every ride, see every show including a great Waterworld show, where the audience got soaked. We did a tour of the current and past filming sets including Wisteria Lane where Desperate Housewives is filmed, a spot of shopping and had a lovely Italian meal eventually leaving the park at 11pm! It was so much fun there just wasn't enough time in the day.
The next few days were spent checking out the beaches along the coast including Venice Beach (full of hippies and people doing silly things inc back flips for $1), Muscle Beach, San Pedro and Long Beach, all of them big and busy!
Our next destination was San Diego, only a 2 hour drive from LA. We arrived at our hotel which had a pool and 2 hot pools. We arrived quite late so had a lie down at the pool followed by dinner. In the morning we headed to Newport Beach to a 40's style diner, Rubys, situated at the end of Balboa Pier. The décor and waiters/resses were very authentic and made you feel like you travelled back in time, the food was good too.
The next day we went to Seaworld, we saw a few really good shows including the Shamu show, Dolphin Show and a really funny seal and sea lion show. The rides were also really good and the marine life was beautiful.
The following day we drove to Balboa Park, a huge park filled with Museams, a Zoo and some little cactus/rose/butterfly gardens. I had a quick dip in the fountain as it was a scorching day. We also visited San Diego's National History Museum which was interesting and also got to see a 3D surfing movie featuring world champion Kelly Slater. That afternoon we went to Fashion Valley, a shopping mall opposite our hotel, it was huge! And had so many cool shops! We stayed there for some dinner before heading back opting for the Panda Express chinese which was yummy and cheap!
The next day we went to Mission Beach, as it was so hot we spent most of the day in the water. That evening we went to The Cheesecake Factory at Fashion Valley, (restaurant, bakery and bar). It was sooo yummy they had the greatest menu with everything you could imagine from a Skinnylicious section to a full blown steak and ribs menu. I was good opting for a salad (my real intentions was to leave room for cheesecake! He he...) and cheesecake it was with Snickers blended in and fuge sauce over the top, delicious! :)
The last day in San Diego was a short one as we had to head back to LA for our flight to Las Vegas so we went to La Jolla beach. It was absolutely rammed with people taking up every grass area with the gazebos and BBQs and the atmosphere was great! The beach was also lovely and the surrounding area was very posh, every house looked to have a pool, basketball net and luxury classic cars in their driveway, true american homes!
When we got back to LA we realised that the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards were on just a few blocks from our hotel, so that was our night sorted, a glass of wine, good food and celebrity spotting! It didnt turn out very successful as the only celeb we seen was Ron Jeremy, a famous porn star who is now about 60 odd and looked a bit rough around the edges! Ha ha... It was a great night though and it was a good atmosphere.
The following day, excited and raring to go as we board our plane to VEGAS!!!!!
