Yesterday we booked a tour on Neighbours set at 12.15pm so that meant we had a lie in today! Unlike Cairns, we were provided with a proper duvet which was useful in the winter! We got up and had our breakfast before waiting in the lobby for the bus.
Eventually, the bus arrived with a massive Neighbours logo splashed on its side and we knew by then that we were in for a treat. Gerry who is our guide gave us a transcript of the tour which were excellent as we were bit worried that we would be missing out a bit. We were transported to the first venue which is the set of Erinsoborough High. It were actually a real school and we weren't allowed to go in so we felt bit awkward taking photos of a school while trying not to look like a group of paedophiles.
The second stop was at one of the main shooting locations for Neighbours. There were several exterior sets including Grease Monkey which were a set in late nineties before I start to watch Neighbours a little. However I did saw Lucas's Garage and Kyle's Autocars which is more familiar and I set my camera to work snapping away- I even committed a crime and stole a bolt from a set to keep! There was also a prop warehouse but we weren't allowed in which disappointed the light-fingers in me.
Gerry had a surprise up his sleeve and to our amazement Sonya from Neighbours turned up for an Q and A session as well to sign autographs. She were so down to earth and seem to handle the attention well and even managed to avoid reaching for a spanner to clock her super-fan when a man were so excited that he kept hugging her all over again. We all got our turn and we talked for a bit and I even threw a joke in. Eventually everyone was satisfied and we all got on the bus.
We drove into a suburb and to our bemusement; we turned into a ordinary cul-de-sac called Pine Oak. To our amazement, the houses in Neighbours are actually the home to ordinary residents that get paid weekly to allow their houses to be available for filming. Neighbours have to let the residents know in advance when they needed the house for filming. During the filming, the residents are contractually obliged to either keep their curtains closed and not to leave their house during the filming or to keep away from their houses until the filming is completed.
We took photos of several houses in Neighbours. Another interesting fact is that all of the house numbers in Neighbours is fictional. For an example, the real house number is no.2 but in Neighbours, it is added by 20 to make it no.22. We also posed with the famous street sign for further photos.
Once we had our fill of the photos, we left the cul-de-sac and started our journey back to the city, we were entertained by the tapes of the classic Neighbours scenes but tons of car crashes featured ( Presumably due to the writers' lack of imagination) did made us all felt all jumpy every time a lorry went close to us!
We got back to the city with time to kill so we decided to visit Eureka Tower which we were supposed to do yesterday but it was too cloudy. We paid for sun and stars ticket which would grant us two entries, one during the daytime and one during nigh time. We got in the elevator and our heads exploded as the lift shot up 9 metres per a second up to 88th floor!
We got out and were rewarded with the majestic view. We could see the whole of the city and most of the landmarks. Melbourne is a very sporty city and we could see MCG, Etihad Stadium, Rod Laver Arena and Albert Park. We larked around for a bit before going back downwards for a meal. It were discovered that I lost my stars ticket. Little do I know at that time, it were the start of my terrible streak that see me also losing my cupcakes and the Melbourne guidebook all in space of a hour!
I had to use my charms to persuade the reception to let me in for free. Predictably enough I succeeded ( I got lucky in fairness because it were same woman who sold me the ticket) We endured our ear drums being shattered once again and enjoyed more epic views before going back downwards and back to our hostel.
During the journey, Ashley and I made friends with a suicidal drunk young pregnant woman but by the time we got off, she had calmed down. The lads succumbed to the peer pressure by the fellow backpackers to go to the bar before eventually going to bed at 3am. Melbourne is turning out to be an exciting city!
