The bus journey from Cambodia to Vietnam was again 'interesting'. Rather than the advertised 6 hours, it took 10, with a lack of air conditioning. The minibus was packed, there were even people sat on small child stools in the aisle, bad times. We did get to see what seemed like the happiest pig in the world having a shower as we drove past though.
Decided to stop off in Can Tho, to break up the journey to Ho Chi Minh City. We actually really liked Can Tho so stayed for 2 nights rather than a quick over night stop.
Got up at 4.45am to see the floating markets on the Mekong Delta, a lot of fruit and veg! Sampled a bit of the pineapple and watermelon (what the market is famous for). We also had a tour around a rice noodle 'factory' and some local villages and spoke with all the kids. The tour guide also serenaded us with Adele and One Direction.
Food hasn't been quite as good as Cambodia so far, a lot of snake and crocodile on the menu. Had a chat with our Vietnamese boat guide about the food. Apparently snake tastes like chicken and dog tastes like pork. Rat is also a delicacy...wasn't that tempted to try rat! Was tempted by the snake wine - it had a load of dead snakes fermenting in a big jar, and smelt like ridiculously strong rum.
The people are very nice. Vietnam seems to be a bit more 'westernised' than Cambodia, although there is quite a big language barrier (by that I mean they don't speak English - feel bad that we have to just rely on people speaking our language!). The international hand signals for drink and bill have worked a treat through.
Had a bit of confusion with the hotel receptionist and taxi driver when asking to go somewhere to watch football (Everton vs Utd). He thought I meant to watch real football, so the taxi driver dropped us at a 5 a side pitch several miles from the hotel. Tried explaining that this was wrong, but had no luck. Had to walk in the rain to find a bar then somehow find our way back. And we lost 2-1.
The brief stop in Can Tho was well worth it. Onto Ho Chi Minh City next!
