We had a good sleep in some amazing beds at our new hostel (they had fleecy sheets!!) before heading over to the Red Planet office for our 3 day salt flat tour. We were all sooooooooooooooo excited, particuarly about the salt flats as we had spent the previous evening with Chris and Corina discussing which funny photos we would create.
After a slow start we all packed into our Lexus jeep, with leather seats and quite a bit of room we were chuffed with how we would travel for the next 3 days. The 4 of us were joined by a dutch guy who seemed friendly enough and after the first stop at the railway ipods we on and we were on our way to the flats. The railway was very interesting as some of the trains had been there for a very long time, being the first ones to arrive in Bolivia. Our first stop at the flats was at Colchani, the village where we got to look round a salt mine and purchase a few souvenirs. Next was the salt flat hotel where we stopped for lunch. As our guide Oscar and the drivers prepared the food the rest of us got to wander around the 100USD a night place and take in its beauty. Everything was made of salt, from the walls to the chairs....even the beds!! If only we couldve stayed here for a night...
Before we knew it we were back in the jeep heading over the flats, driving through 5 inches of water in total awe at the beauty of the place. Coming in rainy season meant that the flats are flooded which I think makes the place even more beautiful providing a mirror like reflection over the plain. Simply breathtaking!! We spent a good few hours on the flats, trying to perfect some funny photos as well as trying to capture the special moment we were experiencing.
Our decision to go with Red Planet had been swayed mainly by their decision to stay on the flat all afternoon to see sunset. Although this meant a long drive the next day, it was definately worth it and the highlight of the trip by far. Seeing the sunset over the flats was totally amazing and just took our breath away. Being the only 2 cars on the flats made the moment even more special, a hair raising moment for sure! As we drove back to Uyuni with a snickers bar as a treat to keep us going before dinner I contemplated what we were seeing before us. Natural beauty at its best.
