Monday morning was our day to sleep in. They charged us about $40 to delay checkout until noon. This seemed like an absurb touristy rip-off. But they got us because many of us paid it. We didn't need to leave the hotel until 2pm to get to the airport. The group wanted to go downtown shopping, and I still had a few things I needed to buy. I intended to sleep in until the last minute possible, but the city of Cuzco had other ideas for me. I woke up at sunrise to construction and hustle and bustle from the streets outside my window, but more intrusive was the crazy noisy furniture moving and cleaning happening behind my head at way too early in the morning. This hotel has been questionable. It is beautiful, but staff are a problem. They are a bit rude and inconsiderate, but the biggest problem has been staff going into guest rooms and rifling through our things. It didn't seem like it happened to me, but it obviously happened to Trish. She returned to her room and her suitcase was on the bed, opened up, things strewn everywhere.
The design of the shower was such that water went everywhere when I showered. Onto the bathroom floor and into the main room floor as well. So not only did I get woken up early in a bad way, after paying money to sleep in, with little sleep, my floor was also a mini swamp as I tried to pack up and get ready. Then, the hotel hair dryer ate my hair.
After all this, headed down to meet the crew in the lobby to go shopping. We got a little turned around on our way and didn't end up finding the major market. We found 2 different markets and I got a nativity scene for Dana's parents, and a pendant for Tanya. I was trying to negotiate with a vendor ( I only had x amount of soles left) and eventually he called me a Chilean - which is the epitome of insults in Peru because they are extremely anti-Chilean due to the wars and various territorial issues that exist between the 2 countries. We found a Joan Lovell duplicate in the market from Sweden that Caro thought was hilarious. We took a picture with her.
We all met at a restaurant before heading to the airport. It was tasty, but expensive. I only had 22 soles so I ordered a bowl of soup. It was fine. I was still hungry. I was irritable and just wanted to sleep and get home at this point. I kept thinking about the 24 hours ahead of me of straight travel.
