After we left Queenstown we travelled down to Lumsden and then on out to Milford Sound. The drive to the Sound was stunning with lakes, snow capped mountains and tunnels through the mountains. It took us nearly 2 hours to get there and we shared the road with tourist buses and lots of campers and cars all heading to the Sound to go on a boat cruise.
We boarded our catermaran cruise boat at 1.30pm and spent the next hour and 45 minutes out on the water. There were bottlenose dolphins, water falls that dropped hundreds of feet over the edge of the mountains into the Sound and sleepy seals sunning themselves. After this we headed back to Te Anau for the night and then on down to the south coast through Riverton, Wallacetown and Winton before arriving in Invercargill.
We were thrilled to visit the museum and see the Burt Munro exhibition - Burt lived in Invercargill and a feature movie the Fastest Indian, depicted his life about his development of a 1920 Indian motor bike. Anthony Hopkins played Burt and the story is so close to the real life story of this amazing bike rider who to this day still holds the record for the fastest bike under the 1000cc class at Bonneville in the USA. Don't miss the photo of Tony trying to relive the glory days of the 'Indian'.
We also wandered through the Queens Park gardens and out to the Bluff to the south of Invercargill. The weather turned pretty awful so we headed for the Catlins and then decided to go on to our friends, Melva and Graham, in Gore. We spent three fantastic days catching up with these great people who we haven't seen since they returned to NZ about 5 years ago.
We are now in Mosgiel, which is just south of Dunedin and staying with Tony's second cousin, Kim. Today we caught the bus into Dunedin and played happy tourist, along with all the passengers from the Sun Princess ocean liner, snapping pictures of all the wonderful churches and buildings. What a fabulous place to visit.
With only 15 days until we leave, we have still many more miles to travel. Christchurch will be our final stop but we will be taking the bus back to Greymouth and then the train back to Christchurch the day before we head back to Melbourne. Hopefully I will get one more entry from NZ. What a fabulous place!!!
