Berry Springs, Litchfield and Nitmiluk National Parks
Leaving Darwin I journeyed south to Berry Springs where I went to the territory wildlife park. I saw the amazing free flight birdshow, then wandered through the park and saw dingoes, stingrays, crocs, barra and turtles. I then went to the spring at BerrySprings to cool off before driving a short distance into Litchfield NP.
In Litchfield I saw the magnetic teite mounds which all face north-south and the cathedral termite mounds. Then drove to Wangi Falls to set up camp. The following day I went to the Bamboo Creek tin mine which is now just a ruin but you can still see the tin in the rock and on the ground. Then went to Walker Creek, which was a small freshwater creek. I then went onto the Cascades and did a 1.8km walk to the top of these beautiful rock holes and waterfalls. I cooled off in the water before following the cascades down stream and back to the car. Next stop was Florence Falls for another short walk and swim and final swim for the day at Buley Rock holes. I am so glad I bought my underwater camera it has come in extremely handy when swimming in all of these freshwater pools. The following morning began with a walk to the top of Wangi Falls before driving to Edith Falls.
Again I swam in the cool clear waters of the falls and later in the afternoon did the walk to the top and swam in those pools.
The next day I drove to Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk NP) and set up camp there. I did the 12 walk to butterfly gorge which didn't disappoint. I didn't swim in the gorge, although it is safe to swim I chose not to. It didn't help that when I got to the lookout for the gorge I could see a 2m croc swimming along below. Most likely a freshy but I was more than happy to use the camp site pool.
From Katherine my journey west began. Next stop the Kimberley, Western Australia.
