So it's my last night in Alice Springs and in the short time I've been here I have become quite fond of the place. It is a small town but has all the necessities. I think I've also become comfortable travelling on my own and I've also enjoyed being in one spot for a week which has allowed to me to go to the gym and not have to put the tent up and down daily.
As I'm writing this, the full moon is in the sky and there are dingoes howling in the distance!
I think I managed to do most things in Alice, I was fascinated by the history of this area and didn't realise how important this part of the country was. I went to the Telegraph Station where I leant about how the overland telegraph was built and the the importance of this telegraph in connecting Australia to the world. Here I also saw the actual 'Alice Spring' for which the town was named, although it's not officially a spring there is water and the name Alice came from the name of the wife of the superintendent of telegraphs, Sir Charles Todd.
I also went to the Pioneering Women's museum which was housed in the old gaol. Both the museum and the gaol were equally interesting and to read of the struggle and hardships of the women and men that pioneered this land was amazing. I also went to the Royal Flying Doctors museum where I learnt there are 21 RFDS bases and 61 aircraft, this surprised me as I thought there were only a few. I was able to go inside of these aircraft and also to hear the stories of people who had been saved by this fantastic service.
As a nature lover I had to go to the Reptile Centre, where I saw all manner of creatures including the very cute thorny devil. I was able to hold a bearded dragon and a 3m long olive python. I went to the Desert Park where there were many animals, mainly birds found all around this area.
I explored the town centre where there are numerous galleries of Aboriginal art and jewellery and I've also met some wonderful people who are also trekking around this great country.
Due to my lack of television however I have missed out on some of the news and current affairs of the time, including the budget. But I have read 3 books since being away and I'm onto my 4th and 5th (I have 2 going at once, a daytime book which is an actual book and a nighttime book which I read off my iPad, so I can see it in the dark)
The next stop is the West McDonnell Ranges for 3 nights before heading north to Darwin.
