Jonny's South American Adventure!
You know what, I don`t even know where to start - I`m so far behind! After saying bye to Juliane, I ended up waiting around for ages in the bus station whilst Karl, Jules and Carlos came to pick me up. The probem was that there turned out to be more than one station for the bus company I had travelled with, and so they had been driving round them all before finally finding me! Anyway, as we set of driving back to Carlos` flat (who Jules had met in Arequipa and agreed to meet up with, then firstly dragged Karl with her and asked if he could stay with them at his place, and then got him to driv all over Lima to pick up yet another gringo who he didn`t know from Adam - so to be fair to the guy, he was pretty cool!), I got filled in on all that had happened whilst I had been falling head over heels back in Huacachina. On their bus to Lima, Karl had fallen for the old "oh I have dropped my keys - no I haven`t! - and now I`m off the bus with your camera" trick and got his camera stolen. See what happens when I trust somebody else to look after him for just two days!
Despite beeing a really nice guy, "just nipping round the corner" doesn`t exist for Carlos, and every trip out seemed to invlove driving round for ages. Or maybe it was just because Lima is really sprawling, who knows. Either way, it soon got a bit frustrating and on Monday, after his maid had cooked us lunch, we decided we had accepted as much hospitality as we could and so moved out into a cool little hostel in Miraflores - it had literally been open for 4 days! It was nice being in an absolutely spotless place for a couple of days, and the little guy who helped run it just couldn`t do enough to help us, despite not speaking a word of English! It was funny when he felt the need to prove to us that the toilet did actually flush when he was showing us round our room!
On Tuesday we met up with Jules and decided it was about time we started making use of the days, and so went on a little sightseeing mission in Lima, which basically involved the Monasterio de San Francisco and its catacombs, the Museo del Tribunal de la Santa Inquisicion, and then walking round a few plazas - before succumbing to the lure of the pub! Bad idea in the sense that come a few hours later we felt like doing absolutely nothing since we were just so sleepy, and so after cooking some food we spent our last nite in Lima watching BBC World News! And that was more or less the end of a kind of nicely uneventful time spent in Lima!
