Headed north on the Pacific Hwy through the Tweed Valley . Drove through some bushland where Koala numbers were being monitored. Also farm land with cattle & lots of sugar cane. Turned off onto Gold Coast Highway. Stopped at Tweed Heads Point Danger. Parked overlooking the sea - -vast golden sands with swimmers & surfers. There's a very attractive modern memorial erected for the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Eastern Australia by Captain Cook in the Endeavour. Also plaques to commemorate the loss of lives at sea during the war as a result of German & Japanese attacks. Had our sandwiches in a purpose built shaded picnic area overlooking the Pacific Ocean with 4 very interested but timid Ibis in attendance. Then Pete discovered that one of his big toe nails was infected so not wanting it to develop into cellulitis we headed straight to the local hospital. Three hours later we emerged with a prescription for antibiotics. We then headed back to the Gold Coast Hwy & saw Surfer's Paradise. Amazing beach - -goes on forever! Surfers seemed to be lining up to get in the water - -one lot go in together then after a few seconds another line go in. Cast any light on that Barry?? They also seem to go out a long way compared to other surfers that we've watched. Surfer's Paradise isn't what I'd go for - -lots of v high multistorey hotels & apartments. Drove on to Southport!!!!! V different to our Southport. Lots of v expensive looking yachts & motor cruisers in the marina and again lots of multistorey accommodation.
On to Brisbane Mantra apartments. Had to pay $30 for the privelidge (sp?!) of having the car valet parked!! Nice apt though right in centre of Brispane, microwave & free breakfast. Early night tonight so we can get up early & see something of Brisbane before we move onto Noosa tomorrow.
