We headed off to Siem Reap and arrived around 2.30, luckily finding a lovely hotel with a pool for $9 a night! We went to pub street that night for an Indian and decided we should have an early night. The next day was spent relaxing around the pool before heading out for a Degustation...This consists of five meat, noodles, rice and veg which you cook yourself at the table on a mini bar-b-q surrounded by water. Angie had chicken and beef (boring!) whilst Mr adventurous had frogs legs, crocodile and snake! They were surprisingly nice, particularly the crocodile which tasted like a cross between fish and chicken.
The next day we headed in to town to meet Chris our boss for the next few weeks and finalised plans for us to start at the school. We headed back to the pool for an hour in the sun before going for a good old English dinner of shepherd's pie and fish and chips. We hired bikes and rode to the school (5km) past a few local villages and joined the teacher in English classes with years 3-6. Angie had to leave early with an upset stomach and only a hole in the floor to use at the school. Went to meet the other volunteers the next day for lunch and met Amo and Natalie, who ended up staying at our hotel with us. After a few days and getting no better, we resigned to visiting the second hospital of our trip (so far).
The doctors confirmed that she had gastroenteritis for the second time and gave her some tablets to sort it out. Angie spent the next few days recovering, whilst Antonio was teaching at the school. In this time he also went with Amo and Natalie to the river and participated in their schools boat race practice sessions. (There is a big water festival coming up and they were practicing for this as part of the festival is boat races between different schools). By Friday Angie was feeling better but was advised to return to school on the Monday so had a day in the sun whilst Antonio was at school. Saturday our friends from Laos and Vietnam Barry and Louise arrived and all six of us spent the day having beers around the pool (except Angie, who was still on water). That night we headed out to celebrate Amo's belated birthday and met up with Matt and Kamran, two lads from our hotel. We ended up going to the temple club and left about 2ish and to Antonio's delight, there was a burger van pulled up outside!
The next day we visited the temples including, Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayon and Taprohm "tree" Temple. Angkor wat was huge and took over an hour just to walk around and Angkor Thom had a temple with 216 faces carved in to the rock. Taprohm was our favourite set deep in the forest, the tree roots grow around the buildings. It was amazing.
Over the next 3 days, we went to the school to teach English and whilst we were there, we bought them a white board and a note pad and pen for every student. On the final day Angie got very emotional saying goodbye as some of the children had made us gifts, including origami birds, a santa statue a ring and a letter from Sinet (one of the brightest little girl we have ever met). On our final day in Siem Reap, we chilled and met up with Chris to say goodbye and went out for a farewell meal with Nat and Amo.
