What was to be a five hour train ride from Oslo to Stockholm, Sweden, turned into 7.5 hours due to delays and constant stopping in the middle of no where. The frustration wasn't even compensated by fantastic scenery as we had helped for, in hind sight we should have flown. But we finally made it.
This very large beautiful city is spread out over 12 islands with a surrounding archipelago. We stayed on an island next to the city centre in a hotel/hostel for three nights.
The first night we had dinner with our friends Nick and Jess who we met in Morocco.
Although slightly cheaper than Norway it was still expensive so we chose our attractions carefully. The next morning, craving a good meal and some decent coffee, we journeyed to an Australian cafe for breakfast we had read about. It was fantastic ass our budget bellies were smiling from the inside.
We then decided to explore the huge city on foot. given the size of the city this took 5 very tiring hours. starting with the main shopping street we saw the theatre where the Nobel Prize is awarded, Royal Palace, old town, churches, town hall and walked the streets of Sodermalm, the funky neighbourhood with amazing views of the city.
On our final day we explored the main tourist island full of museums. We decided to visit the well renowned museum called Vasamuseet. It was incredible. A museum devoted to the salvage of the largest preserved war ship in the world. It sunk 1500 m from shore on its maiden voyage in 1628, spent 333 years at the bottom of Stockholm harbour and was hauled up and displayed 98% in its original state.
It was fascinating and we spent hours here, the photos cannot do the size and magnificence justice.
On the final night we headed to a traditional Swedish restaurant on the hunt for amazing meatballs. Oh did we find them. Meatballs served with creamy mash, gherkins and sour berries with a local beer to wash it down was to die for!!!
We woke up at 430 the next morning to catch a plane to the Baltics in hope of cheap food, cheap alcohol and more adventure.
