Hi everyone!!
I finally made it to Vietnam! We took a boat across the border into Chau Doc and stayed the night there. Unfortunately there are no bars in Chau Doc so we had to sit in our hotel drinking Saigon beer until they turned off the lights at 10pm so it was an early night for us! We were entertained by three Dutch brothers, whom we called Meringue, Rupert and Jay Bird because we couldn't pronounce their names.
The next day we were meant to be on a tour to visit loads of things along the Mekong but after visiting a fish farm and a minority village we were somehow herded onto a local bus and dropped off 6hours later 10kms out of HCMC! Not impressed, but we managed to find another bus and got into the backpacker district.
Yesterday we visited the Cu Chi tunnels where the Vietnamese hid and successfully defeated the Americans during the war. They were amazing, they used shrapnel and unexploded bombs to make horrific traps and weapons to use against the Americans. The original tunnels were 80cms high really small. Kate got stuck down one and had to be pulled out by a Vietnamese guy and a passing tourist classic! I was laughing so much I forgot to get a photo though doh!
After the tunnels we went to the War Remnants Museum which was pretty upsetting. Loads of photos from the war and the after effects of the Agent Orange etc. The Americans were pretty barbaric massacring whole villages etc not nice!
We ended the day by drinking 2 litres of beer for the equivalent of 25p at a Bia Hoi bar on the street with the other Vietnamese locals, I wish I liked beer it would be so much easier! After food we met up with some people from the tour and sampled the local bars, once again there was a distinct lack of clubs so I didn't get to strut my stuff in Ho Chi Minger City gutted!
Today Kate and I had a teeny weeny headache, couldn't think why?! We managed to drag ourselves to the Reunification Palace, which was quite boring, then the Ho Chi Minh Museum, also crap, checked out the markets etc. Just generally wandered around trying not to get run over.
Tomorrow morning we're off top Da Lat to check out some waterfalls and lakes and stuff, then we're off to the beach for a couple of days yeah baby!
Hope you're all well and it's really really cold and raining there!
Love you long time
