Well, we definitely made ourselves known in Mooloolaba water ways on Tuesday! lol!
We hired a two man Kayak in the afternoon for two hours. It was a sunny day and there wasn't any wind, so it seemed a good day to go.
It was a bright orange and yellow colour, so we could be seen for miles! I was at the front, because I had clothes on I didn't want to get wet, so I splashed Ian instead, as he was wearing his trunks! lol
We were provided with a small map which noted some points of interest. I wanted to see Steve Irwin's house and after an hour of looking, we found two! Uncertain of which one it was, I got snappy happy with the camera :) Ian was getting very embarrassed, as residents of the area watched us.
The houses appeared to be a little smaller than we anticipated and one had a garden filled with childrens toys, but I thought there are two young children in the Irwin family, so maybe Terri hasn't had time to tidy up, or we have the wrong area all together!lol!
Ian persisted on trying to move us on, trying to direct the kayak in the other direction which made us even more noticeable as we appeared to have lack of control over the Kayak! lol! I agreed that it would be a good idea to explore some more of the area and releaved Ian of his struggle to control the kayak on his own at the back.
On the way to another point of interest on the map, Ian realised we were looking at the wrong houses! In fact, Steve Irwin's house was very large and had a huge boat called 'Croc One' outside it! LOL! How we didn't notice it before I don't know! The camera came out again, we took several MORE pictures, then moved on to the next destination on the map.
It was quite hard work, especially when jet skis went by, creating waves in the water! My plan to stay dry was abolished! After about 30 mins of exercise, we finally reached the point located on the map as a green dot. It was a run down boat moored up and looked very uninteresting! But was a good rest.
It was getting towards the end of our little trip which meant we didn't have enough time to see the national parks :( so we headed back towards the shop we hired the Kayak from. It was in good time too, as my arms were aching quite a bit! :)
When we had returned the kayak we asked the lady what the boat was all about and she explained it was a good fishing spot!
Oh dear, we should have asked for a little more information before we started, but it was fun and we didn't capsize!!! :)
That wasn't the last of our adventures on the water, Friday we took a one hour cruise of Mooloolaba water ways. This cruise had a commentary, which we thought might educate us a bit more on what we had seen on Tuesday, and would be a little less strenuous than the kayaking!
It was a very similar style boat to the one we went on in Noosa, apparenty it used to be a river ferry in Brisbane. You could tell it wasn't designed for sight seeing, as we were all sat facing each other.
The skipper explained that Mooloolaba is an aboriginal word and it means 'home of black snake' We cruised by some of the most expensive houses in Queensland, some which are owned by people such as a scientist who invented a bacteria which eats oil so it can clear oil spills at sea, property developers, pilots, architects etc etc. Every house looked very different to the next, for example, one had a roof that looked like the wings of a plane (the pilots) and another had the exterior walls painted in several colours which is owned by a colour consultant who repaints it with a different pallette yearly!
We eventually reached the Irwins house, it is apparently their holiday home purchased 5 years ago for $3.5 million mainly for the mooring of his croc one boat! The boat costed $1.5 million to build and was apparently Steve Irwins pride and joy. Believe it or not it was on this boat he passed away when attacked by stingray! but the boat is still used about 3 times a year for Australia zoo's conservation projects.
The last destination was pelican feeding, the skipper stopped the boat and threw fish into the water. Several birds flew over and began to eat. An interesting fact he told us while doing the feeding, pilots have suprisingly spotted pelicans flying as high as 10,000 feet!
We travelled back to land keeping to the speed limit, yes speed limit! They have water police with speed guns! Someone was caught whilst we were there too, and I thought we had it bad in the UK!
Anyway, that was our last trip before we left for Sydney! We will be very busy there, so will update the site as much as possible.
