So I hit the road with 3 German people in Henriks car, aiming the famous Airlie Beach. Music beating in the radio, windows down and mood high we drove along the Bruce Highway. Only stopped for some road works, a couple of Ice creams and fuel, and with that the day passed by, and we arrived in Townsville for our night. And this Henrik was so genius to bring all sorts of Camping-gear along, and we had quickly built up the camp at the beautiful beach of Townsville. Then we went shopping, and Henrik even cooked for "his girls". We had a wonderful funny evening with an old Australian couple and slept in our little tent with the sides open, so the full moon shone in the clear sky.
It was an awesome day, and the next went even better. We got up early, packed our things together after breakfast and went swimming in the sea while the sun slowly got warmer. Back in the car we drove on, and made a lunch-stop in Bowen, a scenic town by at the seaside. We walked a couple of km up the coast in the low water and enjoyed sunshine and freedom. With palms, beaches and crystal clear water everywhere, I decided that I feel really good in this climate. We arrived at our goal in the afternoon and checked in at Koalas Resort Hostel, where we got a small cottage to ourselves with kitchen and bathroom. We stay here the next couple of days, and I will then travel onwards with Julia. We have booked us on a boat, sailing the Whitsunday Islands.
The sailing was great!! Boat was pretty small, a racing yacht, and the group was 14 nice people all in all. The crew was crazy, but not like funny crazy, really crazy-crazy. We had a lot of fun though and sailed out to some islands where we "parked" for the night. The sky was so clear, and it was a wonderful chilly start on a great journey through the Whitsunday's. We slept late in the tiny cabin; Julia and me shared a "double"(read single) bed in the front. Next morning was wonderful, breakfast up on the deck with the first sunshine, and straight after swimming in the coral clear water around a small sandy island. Unfortunately the corals, fish and colours couldn't really count after I have seen the Great Barrier Reef, but it was still a great experience to snorkel around in the warm water while the sun rose on the sky.
We sailed on, and stopped on a wonderfully clear spot in the outskirt of an island, and went snorkelling again. It was really deep water and millions of fish, huge ones as well, swimming right under me. We went under the water and could hear whales singing there, strange sounds. It was really interesting and the water was so nice.
Whitehaven Beach, the world famous beach in the Whitsundays, was our next stop and we spent a couple of hours walking the Whitsundays National Park, overlooking the Whitehaven Bay and feeling the soft white sand underneath our feet while walking along the water. It was awesome, absolutely breathtaking beautiful there, and I loved every moment of it, which of course went really fast and we had to head back onboard. The evening was spent in a resort with beach volleyball and pool games, and I slept outside on the deck with another guy in the night. I had only my sleeping bag, so it was pretty hard to lay there, but the look up on the clear sky full of millions of stars and a milkyway more visible than I ever saw it before, hearing the small waves push gently against the side of the boat and just let the swinging swept me in my sleep, was worth the pain many times. It was so peaceful and quiet, wow! Again, an absolutely wonderful day.
I woke up early and saw the sunrise before I slept on. We went snorkelling again and I was laying on the sundeck all the way back to Airlie Beach, and Julia and I rushed up in the Koala Resort again where Janina and Henrik still are staying and took a shower, picked up our luggage and went to the bus stop. We are going on a night bus 14 hours to Rainbow Beach for our next adventure on Fraser Island:)
