Thailand Travels
Well it's now our final night in Cambodia, been a very interesting and worth while few days in Phnom Penh.
Really nice city, very French looking, but there are LOADS of tuk-tuk and moto drivers who literally follow you along the street and shout at you to try get you to go with them-even if you're right outside the hotel already! We have had a couple of journeys on the back of motos (motorbikes)-with the driving here, it certainly makes for an interesting experience...imagine the whole of Aberdeen without a single set of traffic lights or round about, and you kinda get the idea of what a junction would be like! They official driving side is on the right, but it is a wide known fact that driving regulations such as these are highly flexible!
On our first afternoon we visited the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, which was very nice.
Yesterday we had a rather sombre day of visiting an old high school where many men, women and children were detained and tortured at the hands of the 'Khmer Rouge' before being transported to the 'killing fields,' where we next headed. It was an area full of open mass graves, surrounded by pieces of cloth and bone. Many graves are yet unexcavated, and there is a huge 'stupa' filled with skulls, bones and clothes of people who were killed there. Not very pleasant...
In the afternoon we went to the National Museum. It looked very grand and interesting from the outside, and we excitedly paid our $2 entrance fee. What a waste of money, as we left 20 minutes later, 10 of which I (andy)spent in the toilet after eating a dodgy curry. Too much information, I know, but here's a bit more:as seems to be the common practice in Cambodia, there was no toilet roll. Hence the hand towel came into good use. Liz was horrified, so we now carry our own supply in our bag!
A bit more of a relaxing day today. Went to the market and picked up a few bargains. Many big brand names can be bought at a tenth of the price, as they are made here. DVDs and CDs are also a good buy. Feel free to place any DVD/CD orders, and we'll do our best to find them in Bangkok.
Tomorrow we fly back to Bangkok, and then plan to head to an island called Koh Tao (Turtle Island) to do a four day scuba dive course and pick up our PADI certification. Both can't wait! Just pray there's no hungry sharks...
Hope alls well at home and that nodody's melted in the heat. Very very hot here too, but no time to sunbathe as of yet.
Take care. Both x
