After the excitement of the last 2 days at Australia Zoo we headed out for a day at the coast to a town called Caloundra. This is effectively known as the start of the Sunshine Coast, and even though there was nothing particularly there we wanted to see we thought we might as well go and have a nose around.
On the way in to Caloundra we ended up taking a slight wrong turn thanks to the typically rubbish Ozzie signposting and ended up doing a 15km detour (oops) before we reached Dicky Beach, which was the first stop of the day. It was quite a nice area, spotlessly clean as most places in Oz seem to be so far, so we messed around on the beach a bit but the big plus here was again the gluten free food :) We found a very busy fish and chip shop which smelt wicked so we took the chance and asked them if there chips were gluten free and YEP they were! They were ace! After this we drove back down the coast stopping at lots of little beach towns within Caloundra before heading back to Beerwah for our last night.
We were both glad to leave Beerwah, not because of Australia Zoo which was ACE, but because the campsite was a bit ropey, so it was nice to head back to the coast and start The Sunshine Coast for real. We headed north of Caloundra to a place called Mooloolaba (freaky eh), and as soon as you arrive it felt like a proper beach town. With it still being school hols the place was pretty busy but thankfully the beach was over a km long so we went for a long walk down there before deciding the time was right to actually go in!! We headed back to Bolt, got changed, grabbed some lunch from a Noodle Box we found (yummy) and then went and hit the surf. Now, by hitting the surf we really do mean that because even though the water was only 1-2ft deep, the waves that were breaking were over our heads!! Kept knocking us flat on our ass but it was still great fun and made us start to loose our classic english tan :)
After a morning/afternoon spent in Mooloolaba we drove north for 15 minutes to our campsite for the next 2 nights in a town called Maroochydore. Our campsite, Sea Breeze, was right next to the beach and directly behind Bolt were the dunes and then the beach. As the sun hadn't set we quickly pegged it up to the patrolled part of the beach and Andy went for another swim before calling it a night. We found a gluten free pizza restaurant across the road for dinner called Pizza Capers, frickin vile though :(
The next day we spent the whole day on Maroochydore beach getting pounded by the waves which were seriously strong again. We then came back early to do some laundry and do a quick BBQ for dinner before heading to the cinema to see Transformers 2. WOW!! Such an awesome film!!! BumbleBee got even cooler in this one, Optimus still kicked ass, and Megan Fox was still easy on the eye ;)
Friday we packed up Bolt, headed back to the mall for a gluten free Muffin Break and started heading further north towards our next stop, Noosa!
