Gone walkabout
Hola,
Well, we have had a couple of weeks of early starts but Im finally getting into this siesta malarky. We survived the altitude of the Colca Canyon with possibly the weirdest group of people ever. 4 typically french french people, a few locals, 1 english Mormon and 3 swiss missionaries, very strange indeed. But we saw a lot, relaxed in the hot water springs and got a chance to see the Andean condors, massive birds with 2.5 - 3mtr wingspans.
We left Arequipa (one of the best hostels all year- the Point) on an overnight bus to Nazca driven by Colin McRae without much sleep and arrived in a deserted Nazca at 4am. We eventually got on a plane (just after breakfast-not a good idea, the pilot was almost wearing my scrambled eggs on the back of his shirt) to see the lines. The geoglyphs themselves were ok but the straight lines went all the way to the horizon, pretty cool.
Then on a bus, with some sheep! (check photos) to Ica to stay at Huacachina, a little oasis in the desert of sand dunes. Ideal for sandboarding, thats if sandboarding was not such a waste of time. First you spend 1 hour walking up one of the worlds tallest sand dunes, then you get less than 1 minute where you go all the way to the bottom whilst falling over and generally not looking cool. You then have to walk up again, next it is the first of several showers to remove sand from everywhere. I am still getting sand out of my shoes 2 weeks later.
A quick bus to Lima again then a flight to Puerto Maldonado to take Rachel back to see her rellies the monkeys in the jungle. We saw red howler monkeys and two types of little tamarin monkeys, caiman, capybaras, massive tarantulas, massive ants and tiny frogs, also lots of birds including kingfishers, parrots and macaws. It was nice to be back in the heat and humidity after what has seemed like forever in the cold.
Now we are back in Lima once again and fly to Rio tonight for our last leg and last month.
See you all in a few weeks time.
Ciao
Andy and Rachel
