Gone walkabout
Dearest Reader,
We are currently in Melaka, Malaysia, a really nice port south west Malaysia. Since our last postcard we met with my little Brother in Thailand. I did some diving and got my open water cert to do some more spectacular diving on the barrier reef in Oz. You will be pleased to hear the weather was rubbish in Thailand and our 2 months of looking forward to a bit of a beach holiday was a bit of a wash out. Nethertheless, we wasted the extra week to meet paul, and after dumping a load of souvenirs on him make a quick dash for the border before he could realise how much rubbish we had given him.
After a couple of days in seedy little border towns and a lot of bus travelling we hit KL, staying with Pete an expat and ex Eagle Star employee, but this must not be held against him. Saw most of the sights, including the Menara KL (big tower) and the Petronas Towers.
From there we went to Sabah, Borneo and for once saw some wildlife. Until this point there have not been many on our travels. (The Chinese have eaten all their animals, the Thais are busy eating them, and the Laoatians seem too laid back to realise there are any around them)
We stayed in Sepilok - and I spoke to Francine Patterson (did not know who she was until afterward - famous trainer of Koko the gorilla) check her out on google search. Saw the Orang utan, which i'm afraid still remind me of my brother Graham. I bought a little fishing rod in Penang and christened it here. Caught 5 different species, all looked unlike anything I have caught before and they all fell to my favoured freelined bread technique. They all had big teeth though and 1 was about 2 pounds.
We then ventured into the Jungle to stay at Uncle Tans camp. Very Basic. Rachel enjoyed it, (probably because there was no where to wash) and the guide was a bit of a modern day tarzan, who also played the guitar and spoke several languages purely to woo the women and knew more about animals than Sir David Att and bloody bill oddie put together.
On our tours we saw, Proboscis Monkeys, Long Tailed Macaques, Countless horn bills, Lots of massive fish eagles, Mangrove snakes, Tarantulas, Scorpions, Frogs (poisonous and cute) and earth worms about 3 feet long. We were sleeping in a metal cage, with the monkeys outside and they would rattle the cages, drop food from the trees and steal anything at a moments notice. there was something slightly ironic about the cages but it was lost on me at the time, (but at least they were not selling t-shirts of pictures of me picking my nose.)
From there we went to Turtle Island to see the Turtles laying eggs. we then held some newly hatched ones before releasing them into the sea. Very cute.
At Kota Kinabalu we stayed in a nice little hostel, one of the blokes who worked there was actually from a family of Head hunters - Rachel was very suprised that the Borneons would have such a long history of Recruitment??
Any way head to Singapore tomorrow and australia on the 21st December.
Heres wishing you a happy christmas, the pressent is in the post, honest!
