We arrived in Kratie and for the first time ever we weren't swarmed by tuk tuk or moto drivers. In fact it looked like there weren't any about, we walked a little way along the river and we spotted a couple so imagine our surprise when Casson spotted that one of the had my name on a laminated sheet. The hotel we were staying at had sent one to meet our bus!
Kratie was lovely and our hotel had a pool so even though there wasn't much to do there we decided to stay for a couple of days.
The main reason for going to Kratie was to see the Mekong dolphins so we hired a moped and set off on our second morning there. About 15 minutes into the journey a moped was coming towards us and behind that moped was another moped with a trailer attached to it. There was a scraping noise coming from the trailer and the wheel looked odd, as they both passed us the moped with the trailer overtook the other moped and at the same time a wheel came off and they crashed into each other. Everyone was thrown clear and luckily nobody was seriously hurt (it had been a dad and his son of about 8 on the moped, neither had a helmet on) In Cambodia if there's an accident you're liable for the costs of the repairs and hospital fees, we'd pulled over and ran back to see if everyone was ok and the guy who's trailer had lost a wheel was shaking like a leaf and his toe was split open. No one was bothered if he was ok or not so Casson tried to get him to sit down as he was in shock but he wouldn't. Then in the midst of the chaos (all the locals were out) i saw him walk away into the fields. He wouldn't have been able to pay so he'd done a runner. Maybe we should have said something and maybe if they'd shown him the slightest consideration we would have done but it was clearly an accident and up to them to sort out.
We carried on (albeit I was a bit shaken up after seeing that) and made it to the dolphins. We paid to go out on a boat for 45 minutes. After 10 minutes you could see the dolphins, they were amazing. They didn't come up for air for very long so it was too difficult to get a good picture but it was a brilliant thing to watch. After about 20 minutes our driver pulled up alongside some bushes and tied up, rolled what looked suspiciously like a joint, repeatedly hawked up in the river and then put his feet up. After about 10 minutes he spoke to us to say "you tip me, $4". Needless to say he didn't get what he wanted but surprise surprise it was me who had to tell him. Apparently I'm much better at bad cop than good cop according to Casson!
