I don't think I like Cairo. In fact I think it's a horrible dirty place and I'm counting the sleeps until it's time to leave. The boys don't mind it, but then they don't mind dirt! I don't feel particularly safe here and George seems to attract a lot of attention. We've arranged tours for two of our four days to cover the main attractions. An English speaking guide and a taxi minivan just for us.
Day One
Today we went to the Giza and Saqqara pyramids and also the Sphinx. It is incredibly hot here so having an air conditioned car to get in and out of was great. The boys and Mike also went for a Camel ride. Included in our tour was lunch at a restaurant which was much more than we expected. Unlimited amounts of Pita Bread with dips and then Chicken Shish Kebabs with rice/noodles and French fries(??) Apparently Egyptians love French Fries. We finished with fresh Dates which was appropriate as we had just watched some men picking Dates from Palm Trees…..fascinating to watch.
Day Two
Shattered from the heat and our day out yesterday, we spent today at the Hotel. We went for a swim this morning, (the view of the pyramids from the pool is unreal,) and then found a supermarket, (of sorts,) where we bought some bread and jam for lunch! We all had a nap/rest in the afternoon then went to find an internet café. Nothing works here, even at the hotel. Everyone wants to touch George and everyone is on the take. You can't make eye contact without having to tip them. Tonight we had a power cut in the hotel. Emergency power means little lights in the corridor; we sat in the dark for about 10 minutes. I still don't like it here :-(
Day Three
We went to the Egyptian Museum today to see the collection from Tutankahman's Tomb. It seems so strange to see such an incredible collection in a building that looks like it hasn't been maintained since it was built. Only Jack and Ben went into the Mummy Room but we all went into the Animal mummy room which was fascinating.
We also visited the Muhammad Ali Mosque and did a bit of shopping at the Grand Bazaar. Jack finally got his Rolex watch! Mike did all the bargaining and he's very good at it. Even Ben even got into the groove. Jack and I kept way back.
Day Four
We're leaving today. The boys have had a great time and definitely experienced another culture.By the time we had finished yesterday even Mike had had enough of people approaching us, all wanting to sell something. I don't need to come back here, I've seen the Pyramids and been to the Museum I don't need to see anymore.

Jamie What an amazing experience for the boys! I regret not having visited Egypt when I lived in the UK - one day I will. In the meantime I will just have to live through your photos :)
Catriona Hi Jamie It is an amazing experience and the boys are loving it....I am not!! We do have some incredible photos and as much as I am not enjoying this place, I'm glad we did it.
