Well let me say that my introduction to Italy was not the best in the whole world! But I am determined to fall in love with the city.
Firstly, I arrived at Athens airport to check in my luggage to Rome, only to find that instead of purchasing a ticket departing on 17 September, I purchased a ticket departing 17 May! What a disaster, so I then had to find the cheapest ticket possible for today. Which was not cheap. Somehow the Italians do not invoke much sense of confidence in safety or organisation. We waited for our luggage for a good 45 minutes. Not fun.
I caught the train in to Termini and then a taxi out to the hostel. Fabbro at the front desk was very helpful. He gave me a map and pointed out how to see the Italian sights over three days. He said that I could easily do Trevi Fountain, Camp dei Fiori and Piazza Navona easily that evening. I walked to the Metro (and walk and walked and walked) - my hostel not in the most ideal part of Rome.
Getting on the wrong direction for about 5 stops, then correcting myself I made my way to Piazza del Popolo to find the Spanish steps. Didn't quite find those, but found the Trevi Fountain (quite amazing!) walked and walked and was lost. So I caught a taxi to Campo dei Fiori for dinner. I ended up having a beautiful prosciutto and cheese panini in Piazza Navona and listened to some guitar music.
I searched for this stupid 81 bus that Fabbro told me I could catch home, for about 40 minutes. I gave up and called for a taxi, he didn't know where to go and therefore rejected my fare, kicking me out - in Italian! I then went to find another taxi who was happy to take me. Looking looking looking for my wallet and where must it be? In the other taxi. So disappointed. Luckily Fabbro told me I should only take the bare minimum so I only had 2 money cards. So s***.
Tomorrow is a new day though! And thank you Rome for your warm welcome!!
