Anna & Kerry's South America Travels
Hey everyone,
Still stranded in Sucre - so glad its a nice city, could have been Uyuni where we were stuck and there isnt even an ATM there!! Went to see some Dinosaur tracks on Thursday. Were gonna ride the Dino Truck but it has broken down so we were driven in taxis instead!! Arrived at the quarry about 15 mins outside of Sucre city centre. Had a little explanation from our guide about how the footprints came to be here and the different kinds of footprints that different dinosaurs had. We then walked into the quarry (had to wear hard hats as its still a working quarry extracting lime stone) and went over to the 80m wall containing the tracks. The prints appear to lead up and down hill, but they were actually made on flat land, and over the thousands of years the movement of the earths plates has caused them to become vertical. We could see 100s of foot prints, all of different shapes. They were quite a lot smaller than we imagined, but still very impressive. We saw tracks of a limping T-rex (the right print was much weaker than the left print) a bronchiosauraus (Little Foot, or one with the long neck and tail), a armadillo type one and a kangaroo type dinosaur. We were told that where the prints had both toes and heel the dinosaur was walking, and where they looked like scratches they had been running. We then were able to walk up to and touch some of the footprints. The wall just crumbled in our hands, as it was made up from organic material, and we were afraid we were going to ruin the print.
Its an unbelievable and sad reality that within a few years these prints, along with hundreds before them will disappear, as the area is not protected and will contiue to be used as a quarry, with both erosion and mining destroying the tracks. We were told that a few years ago there had been tracks of two bronciosauraus with their babies walking between them, but these were lost when the area was destroyed by machinery, and no similar prints have been uncovered yet. Even as we were walking around there were JCBs and diggers demolishing rock and drills digging into the earth. We were also told that we will be some of the last people to get this close to the prints as soon the quarry is being shut off to the public, and people will have to view the prints from a visitor centre on top of the hill. Apparently UNESCO has plans to cover the wall in silicone to prevent erosion of the prints, but doesnt have the money to do it yet and the quarry is privately owned.
When we got back to the Plaza we were approached by about 5 shoe shine boys. We agreed to have our trainers polished and paid them the Bs 4. Then we decided we would buy them a little treat each. 2 of them settled for an ice cream from the stall on the plaza, one of them got a Papaya Juice from the market, and the other 2 took us upstairs in the market to a food court and had soup as they said they were very hungry. The lady asked us if we were having anything, but we kindly had to decline as we were sure if we ate anything it would make us ill!! The boys soup was cold, bright green and contained a chicken FOOT (not your KFC drumstick) but actual foot with the claws and everything still on!! They pulled the toes off and gnawed on the foot, but it was basically all skin and fat!!! Anyway when everyone had had their treat (in all it cost us about Bs7 which is about 50p!!) we said good bye to the boys and wandered around the market a bit longer. Everywhere you looked there was dead meat hanging, pigs feet, whole chickens, whole pigs!!! The smell really made you feel bad!! Away from the meat were fruit and veg stalls, and fruit juice stalls where one of the boys had got his papaya juice. We decided it was time for our lunch so bought a traditional market lunch - french stick, cucumber, tomato, red pepper, red onion and tuna for under a pound. Went to the rooftop of our hotel and prepared our lunch, peeling the veg and spending about 10 mins trying to open the tin of tuna with a penknife!!! Was well worth it tho, best sandwich weve had in ages!!!
Anyway that is about all of the excitment in Sucre so far, apart from everywhere we go now we have shoe shine boys following us and asking for ice cream!!!! Were sitting in an internet cafe last night and one stood outside the window the whole time!!
Think they must have spread the word to every shoe shine boy in Sucre!!! Never mind well be moving on soon!!
Oh forgot to mention Ercus the hotels parrot - wakes us up nearly every morning squacking, u think its an old lady shouting but its actually him making a racket!!! Very sweet tho, but cant actually say anything!! Likes having his photo taken as well!
