After buying apparently necessary supplies of water and Rum before setting off on our 4WD adventure we first went to visit 'The Train Cemetery' ... I'm not really sure why exactly this is a tourist attraction. It is a collection of old broken down rusted trains ... kinda interesting and fun to play around on and take silly photos but - random!
As soon as you see the salt flats - it really does take your breath away, it's incredible. So massive and just all so white. From a distance the vast open wide white spaces kind of make the mountains in the distance look a funny shade of blue and kind of like they're floating really, difficult to explain but fantastic to experience.
We had our lunch at a place called 'Fish Island', because it's kinda the shape of a fish. It's an island in the middle of the flats that is basically covered in cacti. It's quite odd on the flats because you kind of feel like all the white is snow, it is always complete clear blue sky and sunny and you're at altitude so it kind of feels like you're on the mountain but then - there's all these cacti! Crazy cool. Later on in the afternoon we also stopped in the middle of nowhere in order to take the perspective photos everyone always thinks of when they think 'Salt Flats'. They're so much fun! And, a lot of people had some really cool ideas on what to do - there is so much you can do with those sorts of photos.
We spent the evening at the famous salt hotel ... unfortunately no photographic evidence but, the bed bases, the tables and the chairs are all made out of salt and the floor is covered in sea salt type thing so when you walk it crunches, probably the craziest place I've ever stayed. There was restrictions on electricity so we only got lights for two hours in the evening, it made for some fun drinking games by torchlight - articulate was brought out and naturally, loved by everyone.
