To ring in the new year of 2013, I chose the capital of Germany, Berlin to celebrate in European style. Being Germany's largest city, it is a beautiful place filled with immense culture & a deep, dark history.
I took part in a 5 hour walking tour around the city (quite alot of exercise in one day for me), where I witnessed some extremely chilling sights along the way. Such as the old jewish quarter, SS Gestapo HQ (the official secret police of Nazi Germany), the famous square where the Nazi book burning took place: Nazi supporters, the SS, & Hitler youth groups burned over 20,000 books to erradicate independant thought, which apparently, posed a threat to Hitler as he wanted people to blindly follow him with no opposition or differing opinions.
I stood on top of Hitler's bunker, where he and his wife commited suicide together. This is after surviving over a whopping 27 assassination attempts through his terror filled years of his dictatorship. Visited the Holocaust Memorial, a memorial to the countless Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Saw the remains of the Berlin wall which was erected in the dead of night and completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin during the Cold War - which you can buy remains of at all good souvenir shops around the city.
On a lighter note spent New Years Eve infront of Branderberg Gates watching the magnificent fireworks, also trying to avoid the potential death of an eyeball as every man and there dog had fireworks of their own, bouncing of the road/buildings/street/bins was complete madness!
Spent the night in an undergroud club which consisted of 3 different levels with a different DJ in each level. Was the most sober NY eve ever as I was not to well with the dreaded runnybum, squirts, trots, ass-quake etc (apologies if this is way too much information for many peoples liking). But because of this, I will try and make up for it by consuming copious amounts of beverages this year ;)
On our last night went on a mission to the oldest restaurant in Berlin, for a traditional feed of pork knuckle and a stein. Visiting this city was a beautiful yet harrowing experience. Now to make this year filled with more adventures than the last one.
Wishing all you crazy cats an amazing year to come! xx
