We arrived in p.p after a relatively painless bus journey and border crossing!! On some good advice we took a tuk tuk rather than trying to walk!! Tuk tuks are great, little carriages on the back of scooters!! Arrived at our hostel lovely jubbly which was lovely!!! It was new, so clean and friendly staff!! We were surprised that most ATMs only give dollars and it is the widely used currency and the riel is used to pay for small things so very often end up paying with two currencies!! As the one dollar bill is the smallest they have!!! we soon found out that in general food and drinks are more expensive than Vietnam so were constantly trying to calculate dollar to euro and dong to try to compare!!
The riverside area was nice, as was the night market, but the city itself was not the most pleasant, a lot of tuk tuk drivers offering u lifts the entire time, children selling items, it was sad to see three young. Children setting off on a scooter with their baskets about 9pm to go selling for the night!! So we headed back to our hostel pretty early to get a drink there!!
The next day we decided to get all the sad and dreary stuff out of the way! So we took off in our tuk tuk hired for the day with two other girls,,went to the museum first and then into the killing fields, it such an important experience but every bit as tough and challenging as you would expect. It was quite difficult to read the biographies of the survivors and what they experienced and witnessed, the pictures in the museums and seeing the torture rooms, equipment and cells was stomach turning! The killing fields were more pleasant as the area is quite beautiful but seeing the mass graves etc was not! The worst was without doubt the killing tree used to kill the children, often in front oof their mothers... There is no words to describe it and no need to go on..,,I was so glad to go there with three others as it would not have been pleasant on your own!!
Afterwards, a quick nap was in order before going for dinner.. We went to Friends, a restaurant that trains and employees street kids and the food was well worth the extra dosh!!! Yum :)
