Alyson, Emily, Julie & Katie's Adventures
Julie, Emily & Alyson did an all day glacier climb up Franz Josef which was beautiful, but hard work and bloody cold! Everyone got to wear very fashionable footwear and clothing, but the crampons were much appreciated (it's all about the passion not the fashion) when clambering over the sheer ice faces and through caves. Luckily, nobody got lost or fell down a cravass. Katie on the other hand decdied to see the glacier in style, via a helicopter so all the hard work of climbing up the glacier was cut out. Still had to climb over rather exciting ice formations though.
We took Dave on an adventure on a boat to the north island which is very different to the south, but still beautiful in it's own way. We decided to participate in the Flying Fox activity which originally we went to watch but ended up doing while we were there. Basically, it's a massive 1km long zip line from the top of a cliff, down in a canyon and under a bridge. Tandem style. Fantastic!
We then drove up to Taupo, another lovely little town in a lake, except at Taupo there are lots of people falling out the sky. Literally. Including Emily & Julie who decided to throw themselves out of a plane at 15,000 feet, strapped to 2 slightly under average heighted Kiwis. The DVD of Emily freefalling was well worth the money, which included an added bonus of Julie tumbling out of the plane. While in Taupo we went to 'Rock & Ropes' which is an oversized adventure playground, consisting of high wires, rickety bridges etc at least 15 metres high. And with NOTHING to hold on to - luckily we were attached to a rope & held on by each other on the ground. Our lives in each other's hands! The worth part was standing at the very top of a telegraph pole before launching foward to trying and grab hold of a trapeze. Nodody caught it.
For Emily's birthday we went to a spa for the day and soaked in the water from the natural hot springs nearby, before each having a 1/2 hour massage. Hard life.
We then drove to Rotorua via an unsealed road - not advisable as it's not possible to travel at more than 40 kph. Dave didn't like it. Rotorua smells like sulphur which isn't the nicest thing but never mind. See ya!
