Philip and I did not have a shore excursion planned for today. We originally planned one, but it was full by the time we tried to book it. We decided to spend the day just visiting the town of Isafjördur where we docked. Turned out to be a good plan as the town was charming.

We visited the maritime history museum first. Although we had not changed any money for Icelandic krónur, we had no trouble using Euros everywhere we went including admission at the museum. There was a sign near the entry that admission was five Euro. I pulled out a ten expecting to be handed two tickets. I did get those two tickets, but I also received a two Euro coin as well. I looked back at the sign thinking that I had read it correctly, but "Oh, no!" The next line on the sign was "Senior: 4 Euro." I don't know what to think of that. I like having the extra money, but I was taken aback by the fact that the clerk assumed we were of an age. I will just have to believe that the age for seniors in Iceland has to be 50 or 40 or something younger than it is in the USA. Or maybe I will start coloring my hair again, after all.

Next we walked into the main part of town. (The maritime museum was near our ship and the water.) We found a cafe with free wi-fi and Philip settled in for a while so he could catch up on email. The Internet connection on the ship is slow, weak and unreliable. I had a cola, but then left him to work while I shopped. I found a nice place for souvenirs that wasn't too expensive and bought the woolen mittens that I wanted to get, but didn't find in Lerwick, Scotland.

When I was finished shopping, I went back to the cafe to meet up with Philip, and we did a walking tour of the town all the way down to the library. It wasn't open when we were there though, but several senior couples (people who clearly looked older than us) were sitting on benches outside the building. The weather is beautiful today--about 65 degrees and sunny.

We stopped for lunch at the Hotel Isafjorour. It was one of two restaurants that we had good recommendations for. The other one was at the maritime museum, and we did not plan to go back that direction. Lunch was delicious. We both had the salted cod, the specialty of the region. I expected a salty taste, but it was light and clean tasting. Very nice.

The three towns in Iceland that we visit on this cruise are all inside fjords. Isafjordur is in the Skutulsfjordur which is inside the larger Isafjardardjup Fjord. The sights traveling through the fjords are not as dramatic as fjords in Norway, but still beautiful. There are little villages and farmland along the coast when the lava landscape gives way to arable and liveable land.

Tonight we went to the ship's show: Claudia Presents Broadway. Claudia is the Cruise Director and the show was a variety of songs performed by the three main singers of the ship accompanied by choreographed dancing. It lasted about an hour and was fun. I like show tunes. Before the show started, a group of four from the entertainment team played with audience members by walking behind or beside them and copying everything that they did. It was kind of silly, but most people were good sports and played along. That made the time waiting for the show to start go by more quickly.
