After leaving Cambodia, we got a coach (Another one!!!) to Vietnam. It was a relatively short journey of 6 hrs, but we had to cross the border along the way. This was uneventful but tedious as you have to take all your gear off the bus,go into a passport office where they check your visa, then go into a customs clearance area where they scan your bag and check the bus before you are allowed back on.
We spent the first night in Ho Chi Minh City, but left early the next morning as our first stop was Hoi An, a small town about halfwayup Vietnam and a quick flight from Ho Chi Minh. Hoi An is a world heritage site because of the ancient fishing village which is still intact unlike most of Vietnam which was destroyed through the years of wars. However….that wasn't the reason for our visit…these days, Hoi An is also famous for its tailors. We had planned to pick up a few items but the sheer scale of options available to you is mind boggling. The shops also have the Asian style of selling which is to badgeryou the second you stroll in front of the shop.In the end, we decided that we would pick up 1 or 2 pieces each…..unfortunatelyonce we were in the shop our resolve crumbled and the shopping list grew quite quickly. I got some shirts and skirts made for work and Dara got a made to measure 3 piece suit and some shirts. We ended up with so much stuff that we had to make a trip to the post office and ship it home.
Hoi An is a REALLY Small town, and a lot of it is off limits to cars to protect the buildings. So we hired a bike and were able to get around the town really easily. There is also a nice beach in Hoi An about 5km from town and we cycled out there for a day out, although my bottom suffered for the next day or two….its been a few years since I rode a bike anywhere. We had 4 days in Hoi An, which was long enough for us and we headed back to Ho Chi Minh.
