That night we got a bus from Tarija to Tupiza, which arrived late (at 5.30am) and in the freeeeeezing cold. A woman called Sylvia from the company I was doing my tour with met us there and walked me to the office of the company. I said bye to Gussy and Jenny and Sylvia gave me a bed to sleep in for a couple of hours. I did that, had a cold shower and then at 9 left for the tour. There were 6 of us in the jeep; me, a French guy called Gregoire, a Danish couple called Katrina and Mikkel, Sonia the cook, and our driver Abraham. We set off into the mountains and Greg, who spoke fluent Spanish, translated what we couldn't understand of Abraham´s information. We saw incredible scenery and took lots of photos before stopping off in a secluded area between mountains for lunch. All our meals were surprisingly nice seeing as we were in the middle of nowhere the whole time. We set off again and were in our slightly cramped jeep until around 5 when we arrived at a small village in the mountains, at around 4000m. We joined forced with a group from another company who just happened to be doing the same tour as us which was really nice because there were 4 young English travellers in that group who I got on with quite well. We played a game of football with these 3 Bolivian children who were much more aclimatised to the altitude than us and then had a nice big hot dinner and got into bed wrapped up in sleeping bags, blankets and our clothes because it was so cold.
The next morning we got up at 5am to get on the road early and saw an unbelievable amount of stars in the sky, and then a really nice sunrise. The second day of our tour was mostly about getting to the places with the spectacular views so we didn't get to the next stop off point until 6 that evening. In the mean time we listened to music, exhanged travelling stories and took photos of the increasingly beautiful surroundings. We were at nearly 5000m that night so it was even colder, but we slept in the next morning til 7 so it was slightly warmer with the sun up.
The next day was incredible. We saw the blue, red and white lagoons, we stopped of at some natural thermal baths (which were really nice but horrible to get out of) and saw lots of wildlife like flamingos and hundreds of llamas, We were in the jeep a lot of the time again though which was becoming increasingly frustrating for us, and when we arrived at the Salt Hostel, we went for a walk up a hill to get a better view of the sunset and the Salt lakes which we had finally reached. Slept well and warmly that night before an early start the next day.
We got up at 5.30am to see the sunset on the Salar de Uyuni which was quite spectacular. Then we headed across the Salar which was just nothingness but really amazing and when we stopped for breakfast we took lots of photos. Because everything is just white with a blue sky on the Salar you can take some really funny photos in which you have no idea of perspective so can have little people standing on other people's hands for example. The last day was the best one and we eventually arrived in Uyuni. I realise it is very hard to describe what the salt flats were like but I think pictures give a better idea so I am going to try and upload some after this but they haven't worked on facebook so I'm not too optimistic. When we got to Uyuni I luckily immediatly bumped into Lucy and Hannah so went to the hotel they were staying in and relaxed for ther rest of the day, part of the time in a bar watching Manchester United against Barcelona. We spent the next day there too doing exactly the same, this time watching Chelsea against Liverpool. There is nothing much to do in Uyuni but it was nice to be with Hannah and Lucy for a while, and the people from my tour were there too so it was nice to relax. The day after that we got a bus here to Potosi, the highest city in the world at 4060m, where we have been to a market where Lucy and Hannah took full advantage of the cheap goods and also been to a restaurant last night where we had to wait over an hour for our food and hadn't eaten much in the day so felt quite faint by the time it arrived.
We are now waiting for the others to arrive but I'll probably go off with Hannah soon to do a bit of travelling with her around Bolivia. I hope these pictures will work!
