Look both ways before you cross the street, or you may get hit by a donkey.
So the second stop of the day and our last stop of the cruise was no other then the famous santorini. Santorini is a member of the cyclades island group and is a volcanic island. It's known for it's white towns hanging off the sides of the back and red volcanic cliffs. It didn't fail to amaze.
We pulled up at about 4pm this afternoon and since the island is completely made of cliffs, there is no port. Therefor our ship dropped anchor in the caldera and we disembarked via smaller boats. We stood at the bottom of the cliff wondering how we should get up to the main town of fira. Well there was cable car.. Or of course donkey. I decided it's worth trying my luck on the back of a creature that once tried to buck me off. We were one of the success stories this time around, thank goodness. The views over the caldera where fantastic as the path wound up the cliff face. And the city at the top was just as spectacular. The town is totally white and spills over the side of the rocks. It's kept completely traditional and the sights were indescribable.
We decided that we would go out for dinner at a restaurant that had a patio with both views of the town and views over the water and the sunset. We had an amazing greek meal, and then (you guessed it) shopped. Mom almost got hit by a passing donkey, but I like to think that it just enriched the experience.
It's funny, we are discovering that the longer we are cruising, the harder it is to acclimate to land. I now find that I will randomly fall sideways like i am still at sea. The worst is when you fall forward though, believe me. It is strange and concerning.
We are currently on the little boats heading back to the cruise ship as we opted for the cable car down the cliffs. Donkey is great for the way up, but apparently they turn into race cars on the way down, and a donkey Ferrari doesn't appeal to me. It's sad as that was our last stop on the cruise, and tomorrow morning we return to Piraeus, port of athens. The greek islands are just amazing, and I hope to return.
