The first stop in Peru was a quick trip to Puno, another town on Lake Titicaca, famous for its 'islas flotantes'. The floating islands, made entirely out of the reeds which grow in the lake are the home of the Uros people. They began living on the islands as a means of escaping the mainland (although now tour boats go over throughout the day!) It took about half an hour by boat to reach the first island. Stepping out was a little nervewracking at first, but the islands are suprisingly sturdy. As well as the island itself, they had houses, boats and lookout points all made out of reeds and the women of the island sat in little reed 'shops' selling their craftwork. Altogether we visited four islands, of the dozens that exist. It was a fairly surreal experience- one of the weirder places I've seen people living on this trip! After the tour was over I spent a couple of hours wandering around the town, before heading to the bus station to wait for my overnight bus to Cusco.
