The wanderings of Alice
As soon as the train got into Bangkok- we were whisked away to the war cemetrys and the bridge over the River Kwai. The cemetries were for the POW who had died building the railway from Burma to Thailand. The museum described how the conditions the POW worked in were absolutely terrible and hundreds died from starvation, disease and exhaustion. A sobering experience.
Back in Bangkok we visited Koh San Road- the place for all bagpackers, hostels, bars and shops of all descriptions. I had an opportunity to try out my haggling skills and bag a few bargains!
We also visited the Grand Palace, a huge spectacular complex made up of temples and palaces, all of which are highly decorative and extremely colourful. It all looks like it was built yesterday but parts of it are centuries old. Around the corner is Wat Poh, another temple complex which holds the reclining Buddha. It's absolutely massive and covered in gold leaf. Alot of effort gone into everything we saw! Again, Bangkok was a city of contrasts= from the spectacular temples to quite a bit of poverty on some of the back streets. Plus it's probably the place you're most likely to get scammed in- as Phil found out a few times with dodgy taxi drivers!
Yes, Phil and I have managed to meet up, and it's off to Cambodia!
