The wanderings of Alice
G'day g'day, how ya goin'?!
Before it was light we drove from Alice Springs out to the Uluru and Kata Tjuta national park. First stop was Kata Tjua, also known as The Olgas. Less well known than Uluru (Ayres Rock), but just as if not more impressive. We went for the Valley of the Winds walk which took us around the rocks and eventually up to one of the viewing points. It was here I bumped into a friend of a friend from University....as you do! I'd known Becca was traveling around Australia but didn't think to arrange to meet in a country as vast and remote as Australia...! The sun was just setting at this point so we drove to the viewing platform for a mug of champagne while watching the sunset over Uluru.
Dinner that evening was quite delicious as Matt our Aussie tour guide was quite the BBQ culinary genius. I didn't think it was possible to do fried rise on a BBQ, but he found a way!
Yet another early start to go and watch sunrise over Uluru. It's amazing how one rock can appear to be so many different colours just due to the light hitting it. Once it had risen we went for a walk around the base of The Rock. All the little creases and folds in the rock that can be seen from a distance turn out to be vast caves and gorges cut into the side, many of which are spiritual sites for the Aboriginal people. At the cultural centre we learnt about how the Aboriginal folk believed the world was a featureless place until Tjukuritja (ancestral beings) came along and shaped it to what we see today. They ask out of respect for their beliefs not to climb Uluru, so we didn't, but we watched those brave enough to give it a try. It's a difficult, steep climb, and around 1 person a year dies attempting it.
The last natural wonder to go and see was Kings Canyon. Fascinating views from all perspectives and the rocks just glowed in the morning sun. Once their up, take a look at the photos as they'll speak better words than I can describe here! So that was the end of our Red Center tour- we headed back to Alice Springs for yet another fun night at Melanka's party bar!
