It was a long and winding journey to Wanaka, and miraculously the rain stopped enough for us to glimpse the amazing view over lake and mountains, stunning. We'd stopped at Fox Glacier on the way and a kindly gentleman had informed us that our back tyre looked a bit flat. Luckily after going back to the petrol station, the local mechanic prised out a drill bit that we had mysteriously managed to pick up on the way. I think Jack was just a bit pissed off that he didn't get to show off his manly mechanical skills by changing the tyre.
In Wanaka we wondered along the lake front chasing the ducks and throwing rocks at them, no wait, that was the children. The highlight of the town had to be a trip to 'Puzzling World', some strange guy's recontruction of 'The Labyrinth' but without David Bowie stealing babies. It was packed full of weird illustions and a room which was tipped at a 45 degree angle where water magically flowed upwards. The 'Great Maze' outside was fun for the first 10 minutes, but after half an hour in the friggin cold we found an emergency exit and sneaked out, much to the disgust of hardcore maze goers.
Today we went skiing up a really high mountain (which involved having to fit snow chains to the car, respect) which was wicked for the first couple of hours. Then the cloud came down and we were skiing through wet air/snow which froze everything - Jack had icicles on his beard and my hair turned prematurely grey. So we gave that up in favour of warm things and are now in Queenstown for the Winter Festival. Think I'll be checking out the Teddy Bear's picnic tomorrow. Sweet.
