As we made our way up to the north of New South Wales, we were getting a bit tired of spending hours every day on a bus, so we decided to break up the journey by visiting little towns on the way. One of these towns I had read about in an article on underrated places to visit on the East Coast. This was Yamba, only a short drive from Coffs Harbour (luckily, because the Greyhound air con broke and began dropping water on everyone!)
From what I knew already, we were expecting a small, quaint town that had been dubbed as ‘Byron, 20 years ago’. The hostel was surprisingly modern (again, no air con so like living in a kettle with the water drained out), and we were SUPER EXCITED to be in a 4 bed room (this is what our lives have come to!)
Yamba was a very small town, kind of like the small places back in WA. There was a Street or so of shops, a fair few coffee shops and cute little touristy shops. I guess, though, that the shops aren’t really the main attraction, as most people are at the beach. We walked down to see the sunset to the break wall at Turner’s Beach, as this was apparently when a fair few dolphins would come into the harbour. We chilled out there for about an hour but sadly there were no dolphins to be seen! However, although we didn’t go surfing, we did soak in the chilled atmosphere of Yamba and left the next day to become even more hipster, finally catching the bus to Byron Bay.
Highlights: the beach, still sunny! Sunset at the beach and watching for dolphins
Accomodation: Yamba YHA
