Where do we even begin?! Since Andy got here we've travelling from Buenos Aires, to Mendoza, Pichilemu, San Pedro de Atacama, across the Bolivian Salt Flats to Uyuni and up to La Paz!
In Buenos Aires we had a rocky first week as Alice's friend Tom was in the hospital following an accident. Lots of trips to the hospital and getting chance to know his awesome family! Luckily Tom has made incredible process since then and hopefully will be back in Texas where he belongs soon :). We threw a dinner party one night with two friends in our lovely AirBnB apartment and had faar to much vino!
Mendoza is Argentinas wine region which of course went down very well with us two! We spent a day at some hot springs that had artificial pools built around and some slides! The next day we went on a cycling vineyard tour with a nice group we met at the hostel. At the first stop a lovely Argentinian man fed us lots of wine, empanadas and information! He also let us have a drink from a giant wine bottle! ;)
Pichilemu is a small town on the coast of Chile about 4 hours from Santiago and is the surf capital of Chile! We spent five days in a gorgeous hostel back in the hills watching the sun set over the sea, surfing, drinking beer and BBQ'ing! It was so relaxing and we met some awesome people as well as getting to try out our tent for the first time. Definitely what you would call cosy but we can make do :). Next we took a 4 hour bus to Santiago, waited for another 4 hours then a 24 hour bus to San Pedro de Atacama... Ouch! Turns out we were lucky though because most of the buses into San Pedro after ours were cancelled due to flooding...in the desert.
The only way to describe San Pedro de Atacama is a tiny dirt town in the middle of the desert with very few amenities. However it is a hub to see some amazing things! Both of us were ill for the first few days so we spent a lot of time in the hostel, which was far from paradise.. But after we recovered we set off at 4am on a trip to see the geysers. We were lucky (or unlucky) enough to hit a huge dumping of snow when we got up high which is obviously fairly rare in the desert! We got wet and cold but the incredible view easily made up for it, with huge plumes of steam coming out of the snowy fields and we even risked it into the hot spring. We met a Danish couple called Martha and Christoffer who we set off on the Uyuni Salt Flats tour with a few days later. Onto Bolivia...!
The three day salt flats tour was definitely a highlight of our trip so far! Every stop the sights seemed to get more amazing. We saw giant geysers and bubbling hot sulphur pits, a red lagoon full of 1000s of wild flamingos, had beer at 9am sat in hot springs and of course the salt flats! We had an awesome guide called willy who helped the boys build a fire (with petrol!) and donated wine to us when we had already had too much.. He let us drive his 4x4 on the salt flats too. Mainly we saw millions of Llamas. After arriving in Uyuni at the end of our tour we got straight on a bus to La Paz, it was a very bumpy journey through the desert on a very old fashion bus which refused to stop at all.. It didn't end well!
La Paz! We all loved it here and ended up spending a week! So many cute little souvenir shops and it was so cheap. We found a 'traditional English pub' and ate bangers and mash and fish and chips and drank far too much! It was so easy to just wander the streets all day and not get bored. Here we cycled the worlds more dangerous road too.. Death road! We ended up just doing it with the two of us and a guide which was amazing.. We went so fast (Andy a little too fast :p) and the sun was shining all day. We ended the trip with lunch at a hotel in the middle of the mountains and jumped around in a pool! Christoffer and Martha left La Paz a few days before us but we're hoping to catch them up in Cusco soon :). Onto Copacabana..
