Copacabana is a small beach town in Bolivia on the edge of Lake Titicaca (the highest lake in the world) which would have been beautiful if it didn't rain the entire time we were there! We had a nice room with a view of the lake anyway and set off at noon the next day to head to Isla Del Sol - Island of the Sun (hahhahaha). After a three hour boat which cost us a whole 3 pounds we climbed up a huge hill to get our room for the night (4 pounds per person!?). The rain decided to stop for a few hours so we went out to discover the island (only four hours from one end to the other on foot). We climbed up to the peak of the island and found a little shack with a pizzeria sign, bought a few beers, pizza and wine from a man with a tiny oven and ate dinner with a view! It started to rain again so we bought a bottle of wine and sat in playing cards and watching the lightening.
It rained all night and all the next day so we got up, went back down the path to the boats (which had turned into a river) and got on the first boat and bus out of copacabana!
We crossed the boarder to Peru and stopped off a few hours later in a small city called Puno, on the other side of the lake. Again more rain! Somehow the hostel managed to keep our room even colder than it was outside, so we put on all the clothes we had and went to a bar. One bottle of whiskey later and we were dancing on the roof in the rain with the owner of the hostel! The next morning, hangover and all, we set off on a tour to see the man-made floating islands of Uros. Andy's birthday present from his sister Ali (a water filtering bottle) was the saving grace of our hangover because we could scoop cold water from the lake and drink it! The islands were really cool, fully made of reeds including the houses and kitchens and boats. They last about 30 years needing maintainance every 2 weeks, and they have a mayor who has to wear a funny wooly hat to show his power! On the same trip we stayed on another island with a Peruvian family who cooked for us and showed us the island... it was an experience.. a cold one.
The next day we left Puno for Cuzco to be reunited with Martha and Christoffer (YAY). The first day we checked out the city, went to the market where they were selling everything you can imagine from full bull heads to cook to a magic cactus that you cook in tea and it makes you high! That night we played games and drank until midnight when we celebrated Andy's midnight birthday! Another bad hangover made getting up at 7am for his birthday trip even harder, but as soon as we got going on the quad bikes with the sun shining our hangovers were gone! We were on the quad bikes for three hours through the Sacred Valley of Cuzco which was beautiful, we saw some salt lakes and after a flash rainfall Andy had too much fun skidding around in the muddy paths. That night a group of us from the hostel went out to celebrate Andy's birthday again with dinner and more beer! Today its been raining like crazy again so tomorrow we are going to head out to Lima (Perus capital) and hopefully find a beach and some sun.
We've finally booked our boat trip from Colombia to Panama to meet up with Tori (my sister) and her boyfriend Zak and we are SO EXCITED :D.
