So I have just arrived into Noosa where we are gonna be staying the night and heading off to Australia zoo in the morning, yey! First i need to update you on my progress.
I last wrote at Airlee beach, since then i have had alot more fun! We went to Rainbow beach next, our departure point for Fraser island safari camping adventure. The town itself is pretty tiny, only a couple of shops and small restaurants, would get pretty boring if you stayed there any length of time but the beach itself was really nice. Our hostel there, Dingos, was quality tho, a good freindly and party atmosphere and comfy beds, and possibly the best part was the height adjustable showers! no bending all over the place to get under the damn water this time!
Our first night there started off great with meeting up with our friend Sarah (aka ''danish'' from now on, we assigned ourselves nicknames for the safari) from the witsundays cruise, and 7 other nice folks around half four ish for a breifing. The group was: Me aka ''Al-fresco'', Hannah aka ''flexible'', Sarah aka ''Danish'', Joanne from Ireland aka ''kinky'', Hillary also from Ireland aka ''wild'', Chris from london aka ''tantric'', Chris from London Ontario aka ''supple'', Dan from london Ontario aka ''erotic'', Martin from germany aka ''drechigre'' (or something like that, its a german word) and ''fishboy'', and Adam from Germany aka ''unforgettable''. This would be our group to go 4x4 safari on Fraser island. We split up after the breifing to go sleep/shower/pack/unpack/get food/drink etc and met back up later in the bar. My plan, as we had spent 16 hours on the bus and gotten hardly any sleep over night to get to Dingos was to go to bed early after a swift pint with the group. As usual, all best made plans go down the pan, and one swift pint and early night led to 5 or more not so swift pints, pool, dancing on tables and a pole, and chatting to some fantastic people from all over the world that were staying at our hostel along with talking to my group members, finaly hitting the hay at 1 ish, not great with a 7 am start!
Onto the safari. I did eventually manage to drag myself out of bed and through to reception around 7.15 ish to put my stuff in storage for our trip and start loading the 4x4 with all our food/tents/beer ( we had 120 cans for 8 people for the 2 nights, good times) etc and have a breif driving and safety lecture. We, as we were so amazing, were to be group a, aka the ''A team''.
To get to Fraser island we had to drive for about twenty mins up to a barge crossing point that took us a massive 5 mins across the sea to the island. Once there the adventure began and beach driving unfolded. The beach there is really really flat and something ridiculous like 120 kilometres in length, pretty much end to end of the island. The island itself is possibly the most awesome place to look at i have ever been to, the sand was great, the sea was beautiful tho highly deadly with sharks and jelly fish and rip currents a plenty, and it was populated by the purest breed of dingo.
Our first stop, after a ridiculously entertaining uphil bumpy trip and a dinner stop, was lake mckenzie, high up on the island with clear water containing natural tea tree oils. We got straight in for a swim as it was around mid day and really hot, the water was fantastic.
After an equally entertaining drive back down to the beach, driven by me, and yes i deliberately went for the bumpiest routes haha, we headed further up the island and checked out a ship wreck and generally looked at the fantastic scenery before finding a place to set up camp right down on the beach! Tents went up fast, as the lads wanted it out of the way to make most of the remaining light, it gets dark here at around 6 at night, to play some football on the beach as the girls cooked our steak dinner. The first night was pretty funny, many beers were drunk after tea and everyone had a great time getting to know each other, and dancing on our tarpauling dance floor. The night was really clear and we all spent a good amount of time lying on the floor looking at the stars, they were awesome.
The next day was spent driving up the island to indian point, a cliff top from which you can see for miles, and then a good trek ojn foot to the champagne pools for another dip. On the return trip we stopped off at eli creek, and swam down it all the way back to the beach. Night 2 was when the fun really kicked in. Noticing we had over half our beers left, approx 80 ish, the group embarked on mass drinking games after our stir fry tea to see if we could poish them all off before going home the next day. More dancing was done and everybody was having a great time, I personally thought it was one of the best times i have had away so far as I really clicked with Dan and both Chris's, and obvisously ''Danish''. Mass mooning of passing campers and also a ranger shortly followed hahaha. Fortunatly another dingos group were camped 30 metres or so away so we decided to go over there and see if they wanted to join the party. As it turned out we took the party to them, lead I am proud to say by myself as cheif of entertainment and group amalgamation. Thier group was 8 girls and 2 guys so i think both were pleased to see more blokes coming across. As an ice breaker we played some drinking games to get to know peoples names and had group particicpation to the classic entertainment of ''I am the music man, i come from down you way and i can play....'' and a funny dance-a-long thing i learned from an irish guy called seamus at airlee, led of course, as i again am very proud to say by myself, no more being shy for me. As a further ice breaker and ridiculously hilarious thing to do i decided to streak through there campsite after having gone to the loos, aka the beach another 20 metres away. Martin our team member was so impressed he decided to join me for the return streak, quality quality times!
After i had reclothed myself i got chatting to members of thier group, mainly a lovely swedish girl called Anniker (however you spell it) who was out here on vacation before continuing her studies to become a teacher, and 2 english girls from london who were asking about america as they were going there next.
The last day of our safari was spent looking at the things we had missed, the rock outcrop known as cathedral rock and a trek to lake wabby. The trek was sweet, through semi rainforest and bush for a good 40 mins. The lake itself was surrounded by the forest on three sides, the last surrounded by a steep sandy beach/dune approximately 40 feet high. this place was beautiful too and im gutted i hadnt taken my camera, tho the batteries were dead anyway, the other group members had cameras tho so they will email them. Then back to the hostel on mainland via the barge.
I have never been so glad to see a shower in my life! I spent at least 10 mins in there, and a real toilet, no squatting anymore. That night was also really good, after a group dinner we all met up again a few hours later at the bar for more drinks and pool and some sad farewells for now, plus it was pirate night at the hostel so it was hilarious.
So we are now in noosa waiting to go to the zoo tommorrow. Another post shall follow.
