Our journey here was much smoother than anticipated with only 6 Miles on un tarmaced roads.
Our hotel here is part of the citadel walls and the owner is one of the most friendly people we've come across yet(we have shared numerous beers and a carafe of wine with him) and found out so much information and gained an insight onto the culture and history of the country! It is so nice to meet some one who is passionate and knowledgeable about their country.
We have enjoyed the sightseeing around the citadel which is in remarkable condition.
Our hotel has been totally renovated and restored by the owner, It took him 4 years to complete the project but I would say that it was certainly worth his effort and is a credit to his determination and vision.
Breakfast was provided in the vaulted cellar with such a selection of home made and local produce that Colin felt he should try most things such as bear and wild boar salami!
One of the things that I most wanted to see whilst in Romanian were the castles but the main castle I wanted to see as about 1 1/2 hours ride away and having travelled so much on such dreadful roads that we decided not to visit. I was very disappointed but our hotelier recommended two places for us to visit. One of which was a privately owned castle which was absolutely fantastic and if I ever win billions on the euro lottery it will be a place I would buy and renovate. The owner told us on our return that the family who own the castle live in Hungary and when the Romanian Government offered to buy the castle, renovate it, and provide them with 2 apartments and an income from the castle for the rest of their lives because they dislike the Romanians so much they refused and so the castle is being looked after by a preservation society!
We had a good day exploring the citadel and as we climbed one of the towers we came across an exhibition for A Romanian scientist Herman Oberth who was involved in the space race and had married a woman from Sighosoara.
We had an interesting discussion with a Romanian girl and her Spanish boyfriend. She was telling us that most young Romanians can't wait to leave the country and they see being able to speak English as their passport out. Both told us that they hated language lessons in school, but by watching and listening to English or American tv and music they improved their English.
Another Romanian who works as private tour guide encouraged us to go and visit a local distillery, which we did on the way to our evening meal. We encountered another couple, the man had obviously been sampling the 'Klinker' and was quite tipsy! He went on to tell us that Romanian could do with another leader like Vlad the Impaler to get rid of the corrupt politicians.
