Yes I made it to Ubud, finally, no more boats. We checked back into Ubud Terrace, where we previously stayed and then just spent the afternoon doing what we do best.. Pampering and eating! We ate at our fav place, Rai Pasti and had our favourite Indonesian dish, Gado Gado. Plumped up and sleepy, we went back to our fav spa place for another massage and hair creme bath. It was just what we needed, we felt amazing afterwards and floated home for an early night. Our Gili days had caught up with us and needed a long sleep.
We woke 12 hours later, stiff as anything from not moving for so long, although apparently I did try to cuddle up to Bry a few times in the night. Haha that's what she gets for sharing a bed with me, snuggles and pillow sharing. It will be so strange to sleep alone when I'm home, or even to just be in my own room alone. It'll take some getting used to! Anyway I don't have to think about that just yet, after our complimentary hotel breakfast, we visited a few shops on the main road and decided to get a taxi to a village that was known for its silver and gold wholesalers. The boys from Gili recommended it and said it was a must do whilst visiting Ubud. Our taxi driver was nice, once we agreed on a good price and time to hire him for, we got on our way and stopped off at various different shops. I bought a silver ring with a black Onyx triangle on it. Very sweet and symbolises my trip with the girls, a lasting memory of our time together - our travelling triangle, aww adorable. Bry bought a gift for her mum and we then headed back to Ubud. As we got out the taxi the heavens opened and the rain came down like a ton of bricks. We were standing in the street trying to see somewhere to eat but soon gave up and ran to a mini mart to wait out the weather. Once it was safe to move on, we went to a restaurant called Bendi, which is proudly named; the cheapest place to eat in Ubud. Not sure why, because the food was really good and they could have definitely charged more. Bry and I were both craving something sweet following our meal so headed to Rai Pasti to check out their desert option. After scouting through a few more shops, we were drained again and headed home for a nap. A shocking two hours later, we woke up and got ready to go to a Jazz Cafe that the boys had also recommended. We grabbed dinner along the way, visiting a Warang that looked like a TGI's on the inside, with motorcycles hanging off the walls and cool Vespa seating. It was designed like an American Diner and the food was amazing. We both had something that can only be described as a tofu and tempe omelette topped with bean sprouts and peanut sauce. Not how we imagined it to look from reading it on the menu but it was delicious!!! We needed to get a taxi to the Jazz Cafe so went to enquire with the ever persistent men that sit on the side of the road shouting "Taxi Taxi". After a few attempts of bartering down the price, we agreed on 15,000 each for a lift on the back of a motorbike. It was a funny ride to say the least, turns out that in the 5 minute journey both drivers had separately asked Bry and I to stay at their houses that night hahaha. Indonesians are some characters. The Jazz Cafe was really nice, really modern, cool people and obviously a great soulful singer and band. The prices reflected the tone of the bar though, one large Bintang was 48,000 IR plus the 15% tax. Not good for a backpacker budget but it is only £3.50 which is cheap compared to London but a little expensive for Asia. Safe to say we took our time drinking our one beer each. It was definitely worth the visit though, and gave us an excuse to put on some mascara and a nice dress.
The next morning was a bright and sunny day so we decided to make the most of it and head to the pool after breakfast. Slapped on some oil and laid their for an hour or so but before we knew it the usual Ubud afternoon storm was starting to kick off. We hid in our room to wait out the rain but this was to the extreme, the eye of the storm was directly above us and there wasn't even a break between the flash of lightening and the clap thunder. We were huddled on the bed, feeling the room vibrate from the noise of thunder. I'm honestly surprised that the thin windows didn't shattered because of how intense the sound and rumble was. It was clear we were going to be stuck in there for a while so we took the opportunity to have a sort out of our stuff and chuck things away. Once the weather had improved, we grabbed a late lunch in Bendi restaurant again and went on a shopping mission. I bought a new dress, a bag, and a few other bits. I was meant to be on a mission to find people presents but there is honestly nothing that anyone would want, it's all hippie bits or crappy souvenirs like inappropriately shaped bottle openers. I doubt you guys would be interested in that! After our long long long looping of all the main shops we went back to the terrace to shower up for the evening. We had some surprise guests that evening too, Kate and Ed left Gili Air a day early so had come to Ubud a day early. Great to see them again, we headed to Rai Pasti and toasted our Bintangs to "unfinished business". It also meant another game of 'Pass the Pigs', one of Bry's brilliant travelling games. I need to buy one of these when I get back, I can't explain the brilliance of it, it has to be played to see it in all it's glory but basically I love it. After our tasty dinner, we headed to another recommended spot called CP Lounge and each treated ourselves to a fancy cocktail, strawberry mojito's, yummy yummy yummy. There was a live Reggae band on too which was cool to listen to, although I made us all sit at the back because it was so loud haha. Sadly we could only afford one drink and we were getting a little bit harassed by one of the barman, asking our names and doing magic tricks so we strolled on home.
It was a pretty restless night sleep for me, it was real hot so we slept with the balcony door open, which meant we could hear all the street noise, motorbikes, birds and dogs howling throughout the night. I was then awake solidly from 6am until 7am, read a chapter of my book and then finally fell back to sleep but soon to be disturbed by the restaurant chairs underneath our room being screeched across the floor as the breakfast shift started. Ahhh. Finally giving up, we got up and packed our bags and got ready to check out because we were heading to Kuta that morning. We met Kate and Ed for our final meal and said our goodbyes once more. We went in search of a taxi and managed to haggle a man down to a reasonable price but not as cheap as we originally got here for, we asked him to wait for us to grab our stuff and pay our bill. Once we checked out, we gave the bag of our unwanted clothes to the young girls who served us breakfast everyday and said they can see if they want any of it. They seemed chuffed with it all, and we felt like we had done a good deed before leaving Ubud.
