We took a 6 hour day bus to Koh Kong in the midday heat, taking day buses are hot but it does have its positives, means even though we're travelling on a hot smelly bus we still get to see the beautiful countryside, the towns flashing by and a glimpse into people's home and what they're doing on their front porches. Everyone knows I've always been a nosey one!!
We arrived in Koh Kong safely and sweaty, tuk tuk'ed over to a hostel we had previously looked into. Had a well needed shower and went out to explore for food because we hadn't eaten all day and it was coming up to 3 o'clock. There is only two cash points in Koh Kong, after walking for an hour or so in the dyer heat, we couldn't find them, giving in we got a tuk tuk driver to take us. Once we had got cash out and eaten lunch the same tuk tuk driver told us to go to his friends travel shop if we were interested in booking any treks, so we did, booked our trek through the Cardamom mountains and our bus ticket with him. That night just consisted of food, card games, getting showered, more card games and sorting our rucksacks out. The lovely Alice has offered to take some of my stuff home for me so I had to work on getting a bag of stuff ready to ship back to the UK. Mum, while I remember, there's a little gift in there for you, call it late Mother's Day but you will need to get it from Alice's mums if you want it before I'm home haha.
Another early morning, 6.30am up for the trekking trip, 8am pick up ready to go deep into the jungle. We drove for 45 minutes and got dropped off on the side of the road with our tour guide Mr Map and his friends brother who was on school holidays, was visiting from Phnom Penh so he was enrolled as the treks chef. Even though he said he had never trekked or cooked in his life - reassuring!! We started our ascend through the jungle. All wearing our long trousers and high socks to prevent the leaches from getting in, yes I did just say leaches. Turns out the little b*****s still tried their luck. They worm their way up your feet, into your shoes before you know it, if your lucky they carry on up your socks instead so you can flick them off with a stick or pick them off with your hands if they're persistent. Horrible things, we all had different reactions to them but when there was 5 on one leg, I think we were all pretty squeamish. About 90 minutes into the trek through the Cardamom mountains, Mr Map showed Laura and I the biggest spider ever, size of my hand with spindly legs and a black and yellow body sitting in his web between two trees, I shrieked and carried on walking with a quick skip in my step. Laura warned Liv to just keep walking and only look at the ground. At that point it felt like it was going to be a long two days! It was so warm, we had to be fully covered because of bugs so it was super tough. I had a dripping tap of sweat coming from my chin and my clothes had stuck to me. Attractiveee!! Mr Map explained a few things we found in the jungle, he showed us some mushrooms, cut tree bark for us to smell and explained how they used it for medicines, we tried a very sour fruit too, it was like unripped plums. After 4 hours of walking we had reached the waterfall, we couldn't wait to get in, we stripped down to our bikinis and jumped in. The guides were first in followed by me, I was obviously the guinea pig to if it was safe but it definitely was because Mr Map brings ever tour here. We swam in the water for about 40 minutes but was getting hungry so got out for some rice and veg in little woven baskets, sitting on the rocks. Once we was all done, we found the guides catching some Zzz's on some higher rocks so we did the same and all fell asleep, I woke up sweating again, the rocks were boiling hot and had warmed me up so much that I had to get up. The guides were awake and I could hear them nearby setting up the camp. After an hour or so I got bored and woke the girls up. We went to camp, choose our hammocks and dumped our stuff. We tried to do some fishing in the shallow pools of the waterfall but proving impossible, even with warrior Alice and her spear and plastic bag haha. It started to rain so we ran to the shelter but after a while it eased up so Kate and I went out to play in the rain, we hadn't been in rain for a while so we basked in it. Sopping wet, we came back under the shelter, then the thunder and lightening started, it was the loudest and brightest storm I had ever seen. We was all huddled under a sheet of plastic trying to keep things dry, we had to take the hammocks down because the rain was coming down with such a force. Once it started to calm down again we went out to look at the waterfall, the shallow pools we were earlier fishing I was no longer shallow, the waterfall was in full flow. The heat coming off the rocks was creating steam to rise off the waters, creating a mystical feel to it. Dinner was soon to be served, we sat on the slate rocks that had already dried. We had chicken BBQ and bread or if you're veggie like me then it consists of bread, BBQ'd onion and courgettes. It was nice but quite plain. We tried to play card games under the lit of our torches but it was pretty difficult by 9pm we had given up and went to bed to play games instead. Each of us in our separate hammocks laid there and played all the car games we used today as kids, I drifted off before the games had finished. It was a dreadful night sleep though, I was obviously to long for the hammock to start with then I kept having nightmares. Kate had to reassure me everything was okay at one point because I woke up gasping, in hot sweats. Very odd. Then throughout the night I was just cold and uncomfortable.
We woke up a little late the next morning, had a rush to get ready as we had to be back in Koh Kong for midday because we was catching a bus back to Siem Reap at 1.30pm. We scuffed down breakfast, when I say breakfast I mean to chops of plain baguette each haha. Mr Map said we was heading to a waterfall but we tried to explain that we was told we would be back for midday in time for the bus. The guy we booked the tour with clearly didn't relay this back to him. Annoyingly this now meant that we had to miss out the next waterfall. We did squeeze in another 3 hour trek though. It's a shame we couldn't have done more trekking but it was nice to go on a camping trip, that's more what it felt like but it was cool to do. It was only us on the tour too so we could be as girly as we wanted and talk about what we wanted because the guides could hardly understand us anyway. We ended the trip on time and even managed to squeeze in a quick wash down followed by an omelette lunch.
Time to tackle the next bus journey, we had a 6 hour bus to Phnom Penh, a four hour stopover then another 7 hour bus to Siem Reap. We had to come back to Phnom Penh because of how the roads were built in Cambodia, there are only two 'motorway' type roads and only one goes to Siem Reap. Guess where we went in our four hour break. Samarky's restaurant!!!
Also just to inform you, we sweated our tans off in the jungle. Turns out I am now the shade of Alice, we tested it in the waterfall, Alice has been away for 5 days and I've been away for 5 months.. What the hell!!! Kate is probably the same as me. Liv is the only one repping the tanned look. Honestly when people ask how long we've been away, I'm embarrassed to say nearly 5 months.

mum You're still people watching then!! I look forward to getting my mother's day present. I was only at Alice's house today collecting your insurance papers, but will arrange to call round again soon. Oh no leaches, yuk, I remember having horrible experiences with leaches!! But the trip sounded worth it. Love Mum
