Byron Bay: The Hippy Town
Byron is a lovely little seaside town with a lot of character and charm. There is a very laid back pace in the town, partly due to the abundance of hippies, surfers and Abbo's.
Our Hostel was basically a home away from home. It was a lodge with the garden backing onto the bush, big pool, two TV lounges and hammocks where we spent most of our evenings. All the other guests seemed to be living there, some free by doing a bit of cleaning.
The hippies organise a free BBQ every Friday which we took advantage of. We had to listen to a bit of preaching and watch some drunk Abbo's dance, but is was worth it.
The main beach was really good, the sand was so white and soft that it squeaked when you stepped on it. Along the coast there were also other secluded little beaches which you could have to yourself. The coastal walk from town to the lighthouse was tiring in blazing sun but was worth it, especially when you get to see migrating whales jumping out the sea!
